Yep... and it seems (to me) that people still have not learned to vote correctly logically here. They are still using votes to RANK photos against each other, not RATE photos on their own merits.

??? I nearly always do that. As I'm voting I score everything based on how that entry image moves me, etc. Then go back and adjust for ones I like better than others. This usually takes place in photos in buckets of a score of 6 and higher (the 5's and below I leave alone). Some of the 6's may go up to a 7 or 8 (or stay at 6). There may some in the 7 bucket that go up, etc...

Yep... I know some do and that makes the rating of the photo meaningless.

If all photos are below average, then the winner should be under 5.5 (in general). If they are all great, then the "brown" would be over 5.5. But that's why I removed "correctly" (even though I think rating each photo apart from all others is the only correct way we should all be doing it). Age old argument of course...

Yet I think that you and Barry are actually saying the same thing.

A good photograph is one that moves you. It may move you because of it's technical perfection, maybe because of the POV, or the lighting. Perhaps the subject matter speaks to you. Maybe it surprises you or intrigues you. Maybe it's a difficult capture and you can only dream of being that good. Maybe because it's confusing, and you keep getting drawn back to it.

A good photograph is one that moves you.

A great photograph is one you cannot forget.

The only "ranking" that I have a problem with is when there are 10 photos in a challenge. You rate the one you think should win as a 10, you think it sucks, but the others suck more. That photo doesnt "deserve" a 10.

Now there's a challenge that has 10 tremendous, awe-inspiring photos. And you decide which order you think they should place, so the one you think should come in 10th you give a 1 to. Even though it's a spectacular photo. That photo, imo, doesn't "deserve" a 1.

With 106 entries, it's pretty hard to do that.

Any if you end up giving 96 entries a 6, going back and moving them up or down makes sense. Because really, not every one of those 96 really rate a 6. Some will move you more or less than others.

So it seems like you guys are saying the same thing...

I rate every photo on its own merit. I might be known to consider a challenge topic, but that's it. And yes, my average score given from challenge to challenge does vary (probably why my vote given score overall is in the middle).

It seems to me that as long as you vote within acceptable parameters according to site rules, your system is your business.

IMNSHO, the only "correct" way is that which you use consistently and across the board.

There are some gems in this challenge. I am still inspired, after all these years. Congratulations to all of us who are still
clicking and voting and keeping it/us together!

It's how I'd vote, and I think it does deserve a one. I rank photos amongst their competitors, not the totality of all photos I've ever seen.

Note that the voting scale asks you to rate the photos as "Good" or "Bad" -- not "Best" or "Worst" ...

When the subject of voting comes up, it's interesting to look at the poster's voting record; average vote cast, received, number of votes cast and receieved.
The stats are more revealing than the theory.

Well, unfortunately, that really doesn't tell the WHOLE story. There are many on here that refuse to vote anything lower than a 6. If they see an image they don't like (or would vote lower on) they just skip it. So their vote numbers are going to be higher (avg vote cast). Not making it up ... has been discussed in forums previously (and no I wouldn't know which thread(s) without searching extensively now to find them).

I don't mind a discussion on this - as long as it remains civilized. I even find it interesting (though we have them so often most everything has been said :) ) However, what I do mind is a rude response to someone else's approach, just because it doesn't happen to agree with yours.

As for my approach, I think I fall somewhere in the middle.

In the long run, the only really important thing is to apply whatever criteria and method used consistently.

Very true. However, one needs to keep in mind when browsing profile stats that those that vote using the entire scale are going to have entirely different numbers than those that use the limited upper-half method, and not to make presumptions too quickly based on 'stats' alone.

Yah....there are some whose style makes me cringe, but it's been the way they vote always and forever, so it's a baseline.

I know my voting style offsets an opposite voting style and it's been the way I've always done it.

Is it "correct"? Who knows, but I do it the same way so it ultimately it comes out in the average.

Well, didn't expect much discussion really... this has all been hashed out many times over the years since I joined. Was simply noting that it has not really improved in the time I've been away either. :(

And the discouragement the voting system brings is (I'm sure) what keeps many away or from taking part.

TBH, since the ratings are so subjective anyway, I'd rather see a system where you award "ranks" to the photos that stand out.

Each person can give out one each of first through fifth place ribbon and then a percentage of entries in Honorable Mentions (say 5-10%). At the end of the voting, points are awarded for each ribbon and totalled. Most points is the winner of the challenge.

Of even simpler... just Like and Love buttons. Nothing more than that. As you vote you just click that you like or love the image and move on. If you don't like it, then it gets no score from you.
