It's a lot to reconfigure all that stuff. I use PaintShop pro and despite fantastic pricing on upgrades, It's a pain to have to reconfigure all my plugins and custom menus, so I only tend to do it every 3 or 4 versions. I stayed on X4 until I was certain that the Nik plugins would work with the newer stuff and then finally went with the 2018 version. And I finally moved away from using the OEM RAW converters now that I am using 3 different brands of cameras (Still not Adobe, though).

The good side of the subscription version is that Adobe definitely adds lots of good functionality frequently, and keeps the RAW converter up to date. Another upside that you may not be aware of is that all of the functionality of the former "Photoshop Extended" product is included.
The downside is, as Steve posted, updates can potentially break 3rd-party add-ins. Frankly, I don't use 3rd-party add-ins at all, so that is of no concern to me, however I'm likely to be in a (small) minority here.

The real downside is when the update requires an "updated" OS and/or hardware. At some point we have to stop buying and throwing away so much stuff ...

It does seem ridiculous that the average life of a computer is as short as it is. What's more ridiculous is the average life of a smart phone! Computer lifetime is more driven by technology advancement than hardware limitations though, and there is an upside to that. We can certainly do things with today's hardware that was nigh impossible a decade ago.
I tend to take older hardware and try to repurpose it such that we get extended use out of it.

Still using (among others) a Mac G3 (OS 8.6) ... would love to find a BBS I can still log into with my 300 baud modem ... :-)

The previous PC I built in early 2009 (a dual core AMD Athlon) lasted me close to 10 years until I felt it wasn't keeping up with the software and storage demands. Still worked fine and good for general usage, however. I gave it to my daughter. The single core Athlon I built in 2003 is sitting on the floor in the other room. I can't bear to toss it out, but nobody would want it, except maybe as a learning project towards an A+ certification.

I consider a phone's life expectancy to be 2 years due to how hard they generally get handled. However, if I had not upgraded my phone a few months ago, I would be now. Seems my new drone requires Android 6 or above and the old phone would not have worked with it's controller.

Getting a new camera poses issues with hardware and software. I had to buy a different memory card and a different version of Elements just to use it.

I'm still using Photoshop CS5 and the only thing I've had to change when I bought my last couple of cameras is that I now need to convert my Canon Raw files to DNG before I can open them in Photoshop.

My elderly computer on the other hand is really struggling to keep up with my demands and I'm pretty sure I'll have to get a new one soon. And when that time comes I may be forced to upgrade Photoshop because I got CS5 on an upgrade special (from elements) two computers ago. Since then installing it on a new computer has been problematic because the system rejects my serial number and I have to contact Adobe to get it fixed. I have a feeling they'll eventually refuse to do so.

Yeah, I could have done that, but I like Elements and I upgrade that every couple of years or so around Christmas. Then it's usually on special for $50, and considering I use it for at least three years before I upgrade, it's cheaper than cloud rental. And I don't like the extra step. I like to do my first eding in RAW as well.

My Adobe page still shows me my serial numbers going back quite a long time. Back to PSE 8. Never had any trouble deactivating and reinstalling any of my iterations of PSE either in another box or back in the same box after a cleaning. The mother ship has always been helpful if I did get stuck.

I hate that extra step and all the time and storage it takes but I'm reluctant to pay for a subscription. Going back to Elements would probably be an option but I don't know what I'd be losing. Do NIK plugins work in Elements? I'd be lost without them.

I've never had a problem finding serial numbers but the one for CS5 doesn't work without help from Adobe. They've always helped me out in the past but with Photoshop having been on a subscription model for so long I fear they will stop supporting CS5. I guess my question will be answered one of these days because I don't think my computer will work for much longer.

I wouldn't see why not. I know it was super easy to install my Topaz Adjust AI.

I do wonder about that for you. I don't much care for the way that both from a software and hardware perspective, one is all too often forced to update.

This place is pretty good....I've bought a couple boxes from them for myself and friends I help. This is prolly going to be my next one.
