Great point.
By the same token, print your photographs, at least the ones that you love. Do not leave them in your computer. |

I have a bunch of them covering the walls of our gallery. I also have specific instructions in my will that my daughter gets my image files. She knows how to deal with them.

| Since our oldest child was born 29 years ago, we have sent out an annual Christmas card with a picture, and for several of those years I also wrote a Christmas letter (that generally poked fun of the kids). My wife thought it would be a wonderful idea to assemble all the cards, pictures and letters into a book to give each of them for Christmas this year. She is great at coming up with ideas for projects that, in the end, I have to implement. I spent an ungodly amount of time rooting through boxes to dig up all the material (we should have been more organized), scanning the pictures, cards and letters (and converting the letters to text), and then laying everything out in a 50 page book. I finally finished the project last Saturday, and the completed books are supposed to arrive tomorrow. I think it turned out pretty well. I am not certain how much they will appreciate the books this Christmas, but I think eventually they will treasure them. |

i have been doing a family calendar for the last six or seven years .. each month has about 5 or 6 photos in it ..
it is made up of our lives .. mostly candid .. and each calendar shows pics i've taken from the year before ..
my niece and nephew live overseas and visit mostly each xmas .. i get photos of them when they are here .. but i often include photos they have taken of their special times which i'm not at .. like graduations and such ..
its a record of our family and especially the kids growing up .. and times we can look back on the remember ..
it took me over 100 hours to do last year's calendar .. just going thru finding the pics i wanted to put in .. and then editing them ..
i usually give out the calendars on xmas day .. and every family unit gets one .. or even two .. depending ..
i use a fantastic site called snapfish .. where i upload my photos and then organize them in the months ..
it saves each project i do .. and i can 'save as' when i do the next year so i keep all the birthdays and special anniversaries in the days of the month .. the quality of the calendar is very good and the pages are quite thick ..
this year i'm slacking off .. its just such a huge job .. my daughter said .. just put in one photo for each month .. which doesnt work for me .. as each month i try and include ppl who's birthdays it is .. along with other photos .. but choosing one or two photos per month .. crazy .. to have to make such a selection .. just choosing the over a hundred photos is challenging ..
i might get around to it over the next few weeks .. but they wont be getting this year's calendar for 2021 till after xmas .. :(
this is one of my favourite months for this year ..

Oh my.... what an incredible idea!! My mom wrote christmas letters every year. She was a writer and kept everything. I may have them in the files that I kept. This would be incredible for my siblings. My kids might not appreciate them now, but may have fun with them in the future. I wonder if I can track them down... |

| My father had an ongoing album (awful old sticky pages) which he filled with photos taken of his grandkids - some he took, others were given to him. For each photo he wrote a poem. After Dad passed away my older brother got the album and he had the photos and poems digitised, had a book made of them and gave each of his siblings a copy of it. We each have a much treasured little book, titled Gaffer's Grandkids. |

Was having a conversation with a friend about what to do with our respective photo libraries, lifelong stuff not a particular event. He said our generation was usually the recipient of stuffed shoe boxes or sticky faded albums from our parents and was unsure what road to take for leaving their archive to his daughter/grandchildren and we discussed the pros & cons of the various options available.
He seemed to favour digital or cloud until I explained the short lifespan of media and the fact that any HQ cloud storage would disappear when the subscription stops being paid. My personal experience over the last 6 years since retiring and (almost) full-time travelling is initially we went with photo books, then blogs/facebook, then other digital platforms. ATM I am going to return to photobooks as they offer the right combination of viewer experience, longevity, value but naturally there will be a digital backup as well now free cloud storage (at a lower quality) is available. |
