| I know that challenge descriptions are open to interpretation but I was just wondering what everyone's thoughts are on this challenge. Is the challenge description suggesting that the final product should look like a school yearbook portrait preferably in sepia tone? |

| I'm going with a portrait of a person in black and white. Tinting is permissible. |

As I reread this I may have misunderstood "Old School". I think it just means an old look to the processing.

I understand the sepia comment to mean “don’t vote people down for submitting sepia images”.
Personally, I don’t think it has to be a portrait of a person. It doesn’t specify that the subject must be human. |

"'Tinting' to emulate old-school images (Sepia would be one example) Is still considered B/W."
And I don't even think it means you should have an "old look". I just think the description is intended to say toned images are still considered Black and Whites so don't vote an entry down because it has sepia (or selenium or any other) tones.

Anybody else notice that the size restriction function seems to be broken? I just realized I had uploaded the wrong (original size) file to the B&W portrait challenge. Before the site wouldn’t have allowed that to happen, correct? Has the restriction been dropped, or is it a bug?
I really hope it is not a bug! It would be nice to be able to use higher quality images!

FWIW.... I was having an unrelated uploading issue and had to use the classic uploader option. I was worried about the same thing, e.g.., picking the wrong image during upload. i was informed that at least the classic uploader is supposed to automatically downsize the image to the max size allowed, and if it fails to do so, the image will not be automatically disqualified by the SC. i’ve tested it a few times, and it does indeed downsize an image that is larger than 1200 pixels on the longest side.

I've also uploaded larger photos successfully. The only time it doesn't seem to work is when the dimensions are right but the file size is too big.

Ok, so does that mean I don't have to worry, the site automatically fixed my mistake? I would hate to get DQ'ed over something silly like this. When I preview the image, it seems to be the same dimension as the other images that I have uploaded that were sized correctly. At least, there's no noticeable size difference, despite the source image being significantly bigger than 1200 pixels on the longest side.

| While you can upload a larger image, it is not really recommended, since the site's automatic resizing is not likely to be optimal, and it precludes any post-resizing sharpening, which is usually best done on the final-sized image. |

Too often in the past when we have had B/W challenges some nitpickers have argued that sepia-toning, selenium-toning, and other such old-school monotone processes don't qualify as B/W because of the tint. We don't think that's a reasonable interpretation and we're trying to remind everyone who reads the description that these toned images are indeed valid B/W entries.
