| Why would a challenge like 'rocks,stones, pebbles' be archival and 'vintage and veteran cars' not be? Access to rocks and stones is universal and continuous. Vintage cars may only seen occasionally. How are such decisions made? |

Good point. I have access to vintage cars one day in each month. That day is next Sunday. No way of changing it, so I've got nothing to enter.

Old cars are everywhere. It's not just a challenge for vintage classic cars, it's a challenge for "veteran", e.g. beat-to-hell vehicles. The rocks etc, on the other hand, was a great candidate for archival because to do well in it you had an edge if you were or had been somewhere spectacular. I was surprised not to see a winner from Yosemite :-)

| The challenge is for vintage and veteran cars which belong to distinct eras. Classic cars were not mentioned, neither were old cars. |

Personally, I think archival challenges should be restricted to fantasy type extended editing challenges, such as the white rabbit challenge, and then only because it allows you to include older elements in your creation. These types of challenges stop being about photography and start being about graphic design. Even though the entries are stitched together from a combination of old and new elements, the resulting entries are still new images.
The one thing that sets DPC apart from other sites IMHO, is the challenge aspect in which the time limitation plays a very important part. Making a challenge like rocks, stones, pebbles archival, puts all newer photographers at a tremendous disadvantage. |

You mean Half Dome would have been a rock?
Where I am there are rarely any old or vintage cars...
Not complaining, just sayin' |

National Parks, Winter, etc. can be archival. There is no winter where I live :) neither are here any National Parks. So far I had no problem with archival. |

In Britain a veteran car is one that was built pre-1905 and a vintage car one that was built pre-1930, so very specific, and not easily accessible! 'Newer' iconic cars may be described as classic cars. Link here.

Thank you Sara. The definitions are the same in Australia and from what I can find out similar in the US too. Definitely not easy to find outside of special exhibitions and club outings. Definitely not synonymous with 'beat-to-hell vehicles'. |
