I have been gone from DPC for a long time and the Advanced Editing rule is kinda new to me. So... before I get myself DQ'ed for doing something stupid...

I understand that you can add elements to your image that are not your own, such as textures, as long as it is not the main subject or a substantial element of the image, correct? So for example, If I add a photo-realistic image into my shot that would be a no-no, but I can add something to the background to help create mood, or lighting or other effects?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Do you mean Extended or Standard? There is no longer Advanced Editing rule, see:

Are you talking about what is now called "standard" editing? If it is obviously a texture, then yes. Such as my recent freestudy entry, where I added textures using Nik analog Efex. I felt I was pushing the use of the texture in this shot, but it performed mediocre and nobody challenged it. Maybe that was responsible for some of the low votes.

You can't add photographic elements to the shot, however, such as if you wanted to place a person on top of a mountain that wasn't in the original shot. That is allowed under extended editing, which pretty much lets you to do any photoshopping you like, as long as the source images are within the allowed date range.

I mean extended editing. So it’s basically anything goes (almost)?

Yes, Pretty much.

In Extended the main restrictions are that all source images must be taken during the submission period, and you can't include copyright or other "identifying" text (note that the rest of the Common Rules still apply). Have fun!
