Stupid me has just realised the Brown challenge is minimal. So just in case anyone else hasn't noticed - you have been warned.

Whoa!!! Thanks, I was just starting to think about an entry, and I forgot!

Thank you, Paul
I almost missed it but found out just an hour ago … I had such a cool entry and now I can't use it because I only have a raw-file …. Bummer!

Melethia had a great suggestion a while back. Her idea was to always leave your camera in RAW + small JPG. The small JPG's take a minimal amount of space and big memory cards are dirt cheap these days.

I always shoot RAW + Highest Quality JPG but this morning's shoot for this challenge was done with no knowledge that it was Minimal and of course they all need cropping as a bare minimum. Shame as would have been quite a good entry. Anyway my fault for not spotting the Minimal bit in the challenge description. I still have something I can enter fortunately.

BTW what is the "etc" in "use a tool to remove sensor dust, etc from your finished image."

Can I remove a couple of specks on the actual image that are not sensor dust?

I think so, but it depends on what the speck is. If bird in the distance, I would say no. If a hot pixel, then yes. I could be wrong, but this is minimal editing.

Example of something I am curious if I can remove legally in minimal assuming this is classed as "etc"

I think you can only remove dust.

I’m sure this has been asked before, but why aren’t RAW images allowed in minimal editing? I played with a couple of different shots before deciding on one that I thought was a decent entry. I had my entry submitted and was admiring my work when I noticed the challenge was minimal editing. Now, none of the shots I took are useable, since I always shoot in RAW. Guess I’ll sit this one out...

Voters should know it’s a minimal challenge. Imperfections will be overlooked, at least by me.

I had my blue ribbon entry disqualified because I had inadvertently used the RAW image in a minimal editing challenge. You can read the DQ comments attached to the image in the comment section.

I may have to sit this one out because I really need to crop :-(

The reason for allowing ANY cloning at all in minimal editing is that the folks shooting with phone cameras, point'n'shoot models, bridge cameras and the like, any camera that doesn't have a removable lens, never need to worry about sensor dust. So there was a vocal subset of the community that felt cleaning up imperfections present ON or IN Sensors was not contrary to the spirit of Minimal Editing, and eventually we accommodated that viewpoint.

Bearing that in mind, the intention of the "et cetera" was to eliminate bickering over whether, for example, a stray hair or a dead pixel qualified as "sensor dust" under the rules. The answer is that they do. But NO "cleaning up" of the scene itself is allowed in post-processing. So if you have a dusty rodent, well, a rodent isn't a sensor so no, you can't grom him after the fact, though you're certainly free to do a comb-out before the portrait if you can get the little guy to sit still for it :-)

Thanks Robert for the clarification. I am not sure the Rodent would sit still for dandruff removal

[Edited to correct typo]

It's why I'm sitting out.
Set up my shot, took the photo, and cleaned up the mess I made with the kids. Went to upload and realized I only shot in RAW.

The last time I shot in JPEG was the last time I entered a minimal challenge here over five years ago.

Curious - do people only shoot in RAW to prevent creating all those extra JPG files that they don't need apart from for DPC Minimal challenges. I always shoot in RAW + JPG tho rarely use the JPGs - but the relative extra file size is so small that I am not too bothered. It does add to the pain when deleting images I don't want to keep.

With Sony A7 III I have two SD slots and an option to shoot RAW+JPEG with RAW going to the faster Slot 1 and JPEG to the slower Slot 2. When I copy to my PC I only copy RAW while leaving JPEG backup on the other SD card. Once Slot 2 is full and I don't want the JPEGs I reformat the card.

It was my daughter's birthday this past weekend. I was having a debate with one of the other parents about deleting photos. I delete quite liberally. They don't, wondering why I would since memory is cheap.

Digital pollution. Knowing that I would never use the JPEG, I see no reason to ever shoot JPEG to begin with. It adds to my digital pollution that may require intervention in the future. One more thing to move around, maintain, organize, and/or delete.

Alternatively, it's one more "backup" copy in case of disaster (corrupt card, inadvertent deletion, drive crash, fire, etc.) ...

FWIW, DPCers with slow internet connections may not realize they can process a RAW image to submit but use an untouched companion JPG for proof: much faster to upload...

Robert wants to make it clear that naturally this does not apply to minimal challenges. It's a general observation about a situation where you might want to have a JPEG image as well as the RAW one.

What she said :-) I was responding to the RAW+JPG comments out of context, so to speak, forgetting that the thread itself is about Minimal Editing :-)

Re RAW vs JPEG a simple rule - for Minimal only JPEG, no RAW; for other challenges you can submit the smaller JPEG or RAW i.e. you have the choice!! Which is another reason why I like non-Minimal so much better :)

Ok, so just to make sure I understand - we can submit RAW images to challenges!? Is that new? I always thought the images have to be jpegs?
