Just being silly -- but someone else asked, as well, so posting it here.

Question about my neighborhood image:

"Wow Wendy how did you get those birds to perform for you, what a find, and where is this?"

This is about an hour away from my house, in Virginia Beach. That's the city in which I work.

I went down to the ocean front because there was a tropical storm due the next day, so I was curious what the waves were like.

The waves weren't all that interesting, but when I turned around to leave, I noticed a family feeding the seagulls from a hotel balconey.

All the time I was thinking that the challenge was "My Neighborhood", but then I realized it was "the" neighborhood. I was excited to be able to use the shot. It's so typical of Virginia Beach. The whole boardwalk is just hotel after hotel.

I thought it was so awesome. I don't think the photo turned out nearly as well as reality. The gulls ended up blending in more than I thought they would. This is one of the times that I think video would have said it better than still. But I'm really glad people liked it. :)

I'm sure the video would be entertaining but I think you picked the right exposure to enter. Her pose is so casual compared to the striving ferocity of the gulls, which seem almost to come out of the wall, as though her casual generosity has the power to create life from bricks.

The gap between her treat and the nearest bird is the tension and suspense of the photo. It really is the perfect moment of that entire escapade.

Thanks, guys! That's really fun to hear. I had a blast seeing it. It did seem a little surreal. :)
