Ok -- just thought I'd give a heads up to people now that it's the last day. Of course I waited until last minute, but I had a shot in mind.

Then I noticed the description.

Who would have thought it would have been a funky description for something so normal? It completely changed what I had in mind. And now I have no idea what to put in.

So I thought I'd see if people actually read this. Because entering AND voting will be affected by those who didn't read it and those who did.

Here ends your friendly neighborhood public service announcement! :)

I read the description, but honestly have no clue what it means.

So I choose to interpret it as something with rocks/pebbles/stones and light. Maybe my shot will do well, maybe it won't. I like it nonetheless.

It ain't a description, it's a POEM! By a master photographer, Wynn Bullock. Telling us that we don't photograph objects, we photograph LIGHT. It doesn't really change anything, you still need to photograph rocks or stone or... and the better the light the better the score :-)

What else is new? Jejeje...

I was JUST having this discussion with another member who is stymied. I am, too, for that matter. Bear can say it ain't a description, but there it is in the description box. Here's what I wrote to my friend.

"The thing about this kind of esoteric challenge is that the person who suggests it and the few who chime in to support it have one idea but the voters often have another. Half of them don't even read past the challenge title. So . . . to score well you have to please people on both sides of the issue. The ones who suggested it would not even require that there be a rock in the image and might score rock entries low because they are too literal. But most voters will, I think, really want a rock."

If your name is Dwayne Johnson, that selfie might do rather well!

I ended up looking at Wynn's photos of rocks, and it definitely was more about how the light played than the rocks, and that was so not my rock photos. That's when I got confused.

this definition by a 19th century British Geologist should clear things up:

A slumber did my spirit seal;
I had no human fears:
She seemed a thing that could not feel
The touch of earthly years.

No motion has she now, no force;
She neither hears nor sees;
Rolled round in earth's diurnal course,
With rocks, and stones, and trees.

Rolled round in earth's diurnal course?

Could we be over thinking it?

Rock on.

So a sort of rock orgy?

And now you have me thinking of the troll scene from Frozen . . .

Entered something fitting the description rather than the title, fully expecting it to be stoned pebbled.

People not voting in the current challenges will be STONED by midnight EST

It would have been appropriate to have this discussion at the beginning of the challenge

Edit to add:

Sorry if I sound like sour pebbles BUT

I will now, on the last day (*two hours) left of the challenge, go look through archives and hopefully find something that fits this discussion.

or better yet the challenge suggestion thread for general input before it went live.

In less than an hour, voters can decide the merits of rocks, stones, pebbles, and use of light while considering the emotional impact, implied narrative, creativity, humor, and inspiration combined with how well the artistic effort handled elements of composition, line, color or tone, pattern, contrast, balance or imbalance, novelty or tradition (likely swayed in part by whether the voter is having a grumpy day or not). I suspect the mention of light in the challenge "description" won't change the voting much. Here's wishing you all a minimum of grumpiness and maximum of happiness in the week ahead.

Yeah -- I started this thread when I noticed it -- about 20 hours to go, and still didn't get anything in. :(

Why does the system sometimes allow you to put in a photo over 700k and sometimes not?

Right. I didn’t see it there either.

Right. I didn’t see it there either.

There's not any requirement, or even any particular tradition, that challenge topics/descriptions be hashed out in the forums beforehand. Sometimes they are, sometimes they aren't. There are arguments to be made on both sides, honestly. Consider a few of facets:

1: The number of people that currently read forum threads and respond to them is at an all-time low, or nearly so. Same limited cast practically every time. So it's not in any case especially representative of the submitting and/or voting community as a whole.

2: Exhaustive pre-challenge discussion of challenge topics/descriptions could, arguably, lead to a stifling of creativity in interpretation and a homogenization of viewpoints on the challenge.

3: Whimsical and/or ambiguous challenge descriptions arguably encourage creativity and, at least, may appeal to members of the community who are, shall we say, less literal-minded than the majority.

In short, I don't see where it's an issue that challenge descriptions aren't always "vetted". These are, after all, CHALLENGES :-)

Very sad response. You're on your own recognizance.

Care to expand on that? It's a bit cryptic.

Yes, should be very high scoring, like in the Insects challenge not long ago when 7 was not enough for a ribbon :)
