My camera died. Completely. All of a sudden it just stopped being functional. No shutter, no screen, no nothing.
And yet, I loved it. So I want to replace it.
The problem is that they don't make it anymore. SO I'm left with buying used, which I'll do. B&H. The first one was rated 9+ but the dial in the front was not functional (couldn't change ISO, couldn't adjust exposure and had no ability to view expanded images). Not good, so it went back. The second used one is stuck in manual mode. Argh. Updated firmware, tried everything. Can't fix it.

Mine was good for more than 4 years... lots of shutter activations. I get that it got tired and died. But what do I do now? Any ideas?? I really liked this camera a lot. I miss it.

hey penny .. was the camera that died the omd em1 .. if so mine did exactly the same .. Olympus said it was the shutter which they replaced .. then it went weird again .. it was like it was on when it was turned off .. I was going to take it to Olympus .. but then it got normal again ... it hasn't misbehaved since ..
and no point taking it in with intermittent fault ..

I've had problems with Olympus mirrorless cameras .. intermittent faults ..
I upgraded to the mk2 when the mk1 became unreliable .. and a week or so ago it decided to stop working .. going to take it to Olympus but it also recovered .. it's a pain having a camera that you can't rely on .. you never know if it's going to crap out .. never had these problems with canon dslrs..

I can't say that fixing the shutter in my case will help because everything is gone. And yes, it's the OMD EM-1. I'm resolved to finding an alternative, I just don't know if one exists at this point.

My Canon was always fine, just big and heavy. I still use it, but don't carry it far. I've loved having this little Olympus, but the experience now is so frustrating.

i know .. you go out and wonder if the camera will pull a hissy fit and stop working .. and it has a couple of times ...
then when you get home where it doesnt even matter that much ... it gets ok again ..

and the lenses .. magic . !!! .. when i go out i can carry at least three with me in my handbag/backpack .. which is really quite small .. try that with a dslr .. !! ..

I just bought an EM-1 (With your input and that of LevT. Thanks a bunch!). Very happy with my first couple of outings with it. It probably won't be my regular travel camera when flying, as the size is getting up toward that of a small DSLR. I'll still use the EM-10 for that. (BTW, I haven't used my Canon 50D in a few years now and sent it to my granddaughter a few weeks ago, when she expressed interest in getting a good camera.)

The original version is incredibly affordable right now, mine was $350 on Ebay with a 13k shutter count, 5 batteries and 2 chargers. I saw many of them going for $300-350. If you are happy with the Mk1, it'll be cheap to replace, and at that price, you can probably take a calculated risk on a used one. The MkII's are still running over a grand, however.

It's odd that you've had such poor luck with a well known camera shop and my Ebay finds have been doing great. Just the luck of the draw.

This year could be called "The year of cameras' unexpected deaths"

I posted a few days ago about the terrible fatal illness of my beloved 6 year old Fujifilm XE2
Neil told me his side of disasters, Roz and now you

My story is simpler though because I'd like to get a new body of Fuji,
the Fujifilm XT30 and keep my lenses. I purchased the first one 6 years ago for same reason as you, to replace my Nikon with a lightweight one

I heard fabulous stories about Panasonic Lumix FZ1000 - for a price

Since I don't know anything about Olympus...can you get another brand with interchangeable lens capability?
I suggest you talk to Tom!!!! Cheers to both of you. And good luck

Glad you found one that works!! I will keep looking. So far, the two used versions I found were affordable but non-functioning.

Thanks. Maybe the smaller cameras are just not built to last. Too bad because there is a market for them.

Olympus and Panasonic both developed the Micro 4/3 system together and their lenses are compatible. However, the FZ1000 appears to be a superzoom that doesn't have an interchangeable lens design.

The main difference to know is that Olympus put the stabilization into the body while Panasonic decided to put it into the lenses. So if you use Olympus lenses on a Lumix, you don't have stabilization. If you use Lumix lenses on an Olympus, you choose to turn one off.

I think some recent Lumix models have gone to dual stabilization however. Since I don't have to invest in another lens system, I may buy a used Lumix at some point just to try it and see what I think.

Penny, my one experience with used aT B&H was negative - had to send it back. I think they aren't willing to spend the manpower to check it over. Used cameras from other sources has been ok.

Mainly it is the deaths I mourn: a Sigma Dp1 (albeit used), my beloved GR 1 last year, and the strange but often wonderful Pentax K 01 this year. Nobody wants to repair this type of electronic device. Apparently.

i need the luck .. !!! ..
anyway .. i think there are adapters you can get so that an incompatible lens can fit on a camera that its not designed for .
i have never done it and there would be ppl here that would know more than me..
but from the little i do know you may lose some functions .. not major ones i believe .. and they may not be as fast focusing .. i could be wrong tho ..
hows that for great information .. i dont know much do i . !! .. ;)
on the positive side .. i do want to help ... :) xx

Wow and Wow Steve ( Yo_Spiff)!!! I am always fascinated by your depth of knowledge.
I may have to print the info you gave us so that I have just in case.

Roz, my answer was to Lynn but thanks for all your good intentions. I think I know what I am doing and remain a Fujifilm user since I know it and love it and it does not take my arm away from its socket.

tnun, I add you to the list of the unhappy year for beloved cameras.

But, again: IS ANYBODY HERE USING A FUJIFILM XT30 (other than Neil) ? So far I read great reviews - they do have two great flaws though: memory card and battery in same compartment and unfriendly tripod capability. Nobody is perfect.

FZ 1000 and 1000 ii. Appear to be super zoom cameras. Not for me. I just ordered another Olympus body NOT from B&H. I’ll keep trying.
I don’t want to give up my lenses.

That was my thought as well. They may be giving a cursory test to the incoming trade ins, not testing all the dials and switches. An individual selling on Ebay may have more incentive to be upfront about any problems and list an appropriate price. I paid about $30-40 more for mine than some other offers, because the seller posted the shutter count with a shot of the count page. I just had a better gut feeling about this one, so paid a few $ more than the minimum.

I own the FZ1000 ii Just bought it. Not perfect but very good...

Edit: I agree on staying with Oly and use the lenses.

Lacking useful knowledge, I'll offer best wishes. There's so much out there I'm sure you'll have a soft landing and resume taking fabulous pictures.

Thanks Rich, you're too kind. I will figure out something.

Lynn, why don't you want to splurge on a new EM-1 Mark II? I think it's worth it. Many improvements, and feels like a more solid camera. I also had issues with my EM-1 (the back dial started skipping badly, had to send it for warranty repair, it worked for a while and now is doing the same thing). No issues with mark II so far.

I'll second the recommendation on the EM-1 mk2, had no issues with the one we've got. We've also had no problems with the EM-5 mk2 nor the PEN-F either, if you want cheaper yet nearly as capable alternate options :)

Thanks. I have the Mark II but the problem is that I still use CS6 and the newer RAW files are not supported, so I don't use it much. And it's just enough bigger in size that I prefer the smaller original. I'm sorry to hear that you also have had issues with it too because I really want to stick with Olympus. I'm pretty sure Roz has said she had issues with both versions.

The reason I got this camera in the first place had a lot to do with the fact that all the controls are similarly placed to the big Canon. I'm very much a creature of habit and get frustrated easily when it comes to technology. My husband really likes the PENF but knows it wouldn't work for me. My fear is that I'll find another EM-1 but it won't be new either and won't last long.

Edit to add.. I’m so sorry they discontinued it so quickly.
