we keep saying this is a site not just to stretch ourselves and step out of our comfort zones .. among other things .. but speaking for myself .. to learn as well ..

we only get so much information looking at someone else's photograph ..
when they tell us the camera settings we learn SO MUCH MORE ... how many times have you seen a photograph and wondered what shutter speed, what aperture and iso they used to get that shot ...
it happens to me a lot ..

is there a way we can get people to add their camera settings ..
its really not that hard to do ..
those settings are available before you upload the photograph .. if you have it so those settings don't automatically come in when you upload you can always add them later ..

can the site council recommend that people add the camera settings .. somewhere people will see it .. so that the suggestion i'm making here in this thread doesn't get a few looks and comments and then fades away into nothingness ..

in anticipation of great changes .. from roz .. xx

edit to say .. i have occasionally not put them in myself .. so i will make sure that i do from now on .. !! .. ;)

I always add mine, maybe missed a couple? It's a habit. I feel weird if I don't fill in the info tabs. I found it really helpful when I first started here over a decade ago. I always wanted to know what lens people used. Many don't even put lens info either.

ditto, ditto. I had been meaning to suggest this for some time. And I wonder, since I nearly always shoot in aperture priority, if peeps would like to share such modes as well: maybe I should vary my routine. (I do have some old lenses that do not register some of the information, but I try to remember).

I asked almost the same question a few years ago. I was asking for a focal length field to be added. I'll try to remember to add some further information to my notes. Occasionally I get a comment that tells me people do read those notes.

This topic was for sure a few years ago.

Even that I don't excel in technicality (exel!!!!) I indicate mostly for myself the setting, unfortunately not always the ISO since it does not appear on the quick info. I look always at the other people's settings.

I also would LOVE if people add LOCATION

There are many times when I am curious about someone's photo. What it is, or how they achieved a certain look, for example. but when I go back, there are no notes. We can't force people to do that however. It's been well discussed that if we force something like that on members, there will be less participation.

If I upload a regularly saved image, it automatically puts the settings info in. But, if I use Save For Web, it strips them off and I forget, or am too lazy, to go look them up and put them in. Usually, I think that no one ever looks anyway...

hey Lydia ..
this is from memory so I could be wrong .. but isn't there an option when you're saving for web to also save camera settings .. ?? ..

some ppl are more willing to share than others .. that's life .. and I'm not talking about forcing .. probably appealing to people's 'better' nature ..

but if so many of us are very keen to see how a photo became what we see here .. I don't see why adding that info would put people off .. it could actually do the reverse .. have more give and take ..

and like I said .. it's really not that difficult to put in the camera settings even if they don't go on automatically .. like with save for web settings .. (which I think can be changed in the options to keep the camera settings when saving) ... but it could take 5 mins max to add after the pic is uploaded ..

aren't we supposed to be helping each other here .. that 5 mins is like giving a gift to the other ppl that we share this site with ..

I have a bad tendency to forget. It will bring some things through if I do a save as (although it doesn't pull my camera and lens for some weird reason). But if you have to do a Save As legacy to get it down below 700k, it doesn't bring anything through.

What I'm hoping for the most is to get notifications if someone responds to your comments/posts, like they do on facebook or other sites.

So if I didn't enter it, and someone asks, I'll know they'll see the response.

Ok -- I didn't say that well. But for instance, in the comments on my neighborhood shot, Anita asked a question. I thought about responding in the comments, but I figured once people look at the results of a challenge, they probably don't go back time and time again to see if there's an answer. Yes, she could have PMd me. Yes I could have PMd her. But those types of questions can be interesting to more than just one person. So having a notification when someone responds to your post would be great.

Also, I wish that Niall would resurrect his smartphone app. It doesn't work with my phone anymore. But it was fun having my phone vibrate when a new vote, comment or pm came in.

yes Wendy .. that would be wonderful .. i have a feeling when they update this site that is one of the things that may be on the top of their list to do .. we often respond to someone's comment on our photo but how many ppl go back and check .. :(

edit to say .. it is a bit of an annoyance to have to pm someone in relation to a photo or a comment etc .. when it would get rid of so many steps to just write our comment on their pic and if they respond we will get a notification .. like bring in tagging .. :)

Yes!!! I too look for camera and EXIF. That's how we learn. It is an extra step if using SFW though. Cameras and lenses, I think, only show up automatically if said equipment is listed in your preferences.

I don't have a problem sharing location, I just forget. And since most of my photos are candid, notes aren't generally relevant. I do like reading them though.

Hurryyyy that means I must be in roz good boy list and I can submit Santa list to get what all other things I want, :D

but yes I agreed, I learned many things from the settings and how to. there are some creative shots but it is just that how to not everyone forte to present, they can execute well.

I always enter my settings and editing steps, at least the tools I use. I would love to force everyone to do this, but would that cause a decline in participation?
09/30/2019 05:53:47 AM · #16
I wonder if increasing the max size from 700KB to a bit higher would prevent the need for people to save for web (or similar save option) that strips out the meta data. My settings are normally populated apart from when I save for web or do some sort of HDR affair. I find it really useful seeing other peoples settings.
09/30/2019 06:01:19 AM · #17
Just looked through TT of Round and 6 people included the settings, that's nice. The remaining 4 - PLEASE do this as well!! You know who you are!

Maybe name and shame them? ;)

i just saved for web a photo i did for a facebook photography group .. i wanted to see if there was an option to save the metadata when you saved for web .. ..
and there is .. when i uploaded the pic here in dpc all the camera settings came in ..
i'd say most save for web software works the same way .. ??

Thanks Roz. I can't believe I never noticed that option.

Ok so I’m still waiting, and yes I do go back to the photo to check to see if the photographer answers my question, so come on Wendy cough up I want to know ;)

And I save to web, and am too lazy to add details, if anyone cared they’d ask, I think skewsme asked once, and I replied. I do have a thing about locations. I wish more ppl would leave a location on their entry, are you hiding from someone who knows?? I mean one doesn’t have to fill in that part on every single photo, but on an entry where maybe one would love to travel to, it could be helpful. Just saying. I noticed some ppl regularly fill that part in, but most seem to not, and I’m not saying I always do, but on most occasions I try.

I used to be better at filling this information out. Lately, I have done a poor job of it. I am generally editing up close to the deadline, so I am in a hurry to upload it and go to bed. However, I will try to be better about including this information.

what do people think about this ..
not making a rule .. but a suggestion .. :)

edit to say .. putting it in the actual rules for standard and minimal editing it may get missed .. but if it comes in every time a person goes to enter a challenge it will be seen .. :)

The trouble with including metadata in the JPG is that metadata include photographer's name etc etc, and even the location if the GPS function is enabled. When DPC automatically populates those fields upon submission, it means that the entry in question has a non-stripped JPG. And THAT means that anyone with an EXIF viewer as an add-on to their browser can read who the photographer is during voting.

For this reason, we have always ENCOURAGED people to strip their EXIF for entries.

Encouraging folks to populate the data fields manually (which is how MY data get entered) is another thing altogether and I am good with that...
