What constitutes the neighbourhood? My own neighbourhood? Up to what distance? What are the parameters?
09/15/2019 08:36:22 PM · #2
hey Marion .. i actually looked up the definition as i live rural .. which apparently doesnt count ..
so just one of the parameters is it probably should be "a district or community within a town or city" .. that was the dictionary definition ..
my personal thought is that the voters seem to like it when its really obvious that it satisfies the challenge description ..
so if it was very close up and didnt scream neighbourhood it might get marked down ..
then again .. there can be some very imaginative approaches to the challenges that need a second or two to realize that they totally fit .. but on a quick glance they could fall thru the cracks ..
having said all that .. i get it wrong a lot of the time ... but hopefully something i've said could be helpful .. ? .. :)

Catch word: community.

Someone will post a stupendous landscape with one or two buildings in the distance and imply that this is the view of their neighborhood from their yard. Visual appeal is most important and a great shot can overcome the low votes from those who perceive a shoehorn.

I thought that neighbourhood without people would be more Architecture or Urban Landscape, and therefore people are needed to define neighbourhood. To me Commmunity is probably closest to this definition but it needs to be placed within an Urban Landscape where people live.

I hope this helps rather than muddy it up even more! ;)

PS I just searched Google Images for Neighborhood (American spelling) and got hundreds of extremely boring photos of suburban houses without any people!! I hope this is not what this challenge was meant to be about.

So do we need people or not that is the question?

This.

People or not, cater to the majority of voters. It's how you play the game.

Personally, I would say neighborhood is about the place, while community is about the people. However, every neighborhood has those characters that define the place. So, if it is a really compelling shot, which tells me about the neighborhood, I think either could work.

I hope to please my own concept of (my) neighbourhood. Maybe I will find something neighbourly...

I feel like y'all haven't accurately defined the word yet, but you're in the neighborhood.

If the challenge topic was My Neighborhood it would be much easier.
09/16/2019 05:42:17 PM · #14
But who are the people in your neighborhood?

In your neighborhood...

They're in your neighborhood.

Neighbourhood to me is where you live, the diversity of the buildings and the people who reside there together or singly

But it isn't :-) So it's harder.

Neighborhood is a place where people congregate.

You've never been on a trip and visited a neighborhood not-your-own and recognized it as such?

I resisted the urge to pander and am quite pleased with my entry.

To have a neighborhood, neighbors are required.

I have an entry for Neighborhood, in my view it shows it but I don't think it is a winning photo. I suspect that photos of some very depressing neighborhoods will be the winners in this challenge. I would be pleased to be proven wrong.

Or no houses/dwellings. Neighborhood could mean a gathering of people at a local park or playground. It's what you want to make of it.
