So -- I'm going to practice this week and shoot next week. I think there's a lot of techniques to explore here. I'm not planning on photographing my real subject until next week. So I'm just going to play around in this thread.

But I figure we don't have much discussion after a challenge, so perhaps this is a good way to learn. Explore for a week, get feedback and share what you've learned!

I have a couple of attempts and a question that I'll post shortly. How about you?

Soon as the rain stops will get out there and experiment a little. Does shooting macros w/flash count?

I would think if it's backlit and you need flash?

I'm all for learning!

I don't have a built in flash on my D500 and I can't get the separate flash thing to attach properly so maybe I'll start with learning how to do that first!
And if I fail..I can revert back to my D5200, which HAS got a built in flash and play with the remote widget dooberry that I bought a couple of years ago and used just once.....
And maybe, just maybe, after all that I can find a subject to flash to on.

Whether I get an entry or not, I can at least pick some knowledge up by trying! :)

What specifically are the requirements for this? For example, can it be dusk when this is shot. I've experimented with flash at dusk and gotten some amazing results.

That definitely would be balancing flash and sun. It's even harder because of the color differences.

A macro that's primarily lit by a ring flash, say, would NOT (IMO) qualify. This challenge is more about illuminating subjects within contextual backgrounds and working the light to enhance the subjects. In a similar sense, I have always felt that macro shots are sort of "cheating" in Shallow DOF challenges, where the learning goal (IMO) ought to be to learn to work with selective planes of focus at wider apertures...

You can always gel your flash to get the color temperature to closely match. It's a pain, but fortunately a complete set isn't a fortune.

I wish I could watch the video, but due to a messed upgrade to my internet connection, I'm left with very little data available for the foreseeable future. Unfortunately it will probably be too late to use the information for this challenge by the time my problem is sorted out.

the main point with fill flash that it should not be obtrusive, but with portraits it will put catch lights in the eyes, which lifts the photo.

Same here. I'm going out again later to see if I can find a reasonable subject for this.
