Since we have two weeks for challenges, let's do some things that we don't do often, yet are really handy techniques to know.

balancing flash outdoors

We're worried that such specific, gear-oriented technical challenges may not be resonant with enough active users. How many people actually HAVE flash units they want to learn to work with outdoors?

Not me! ;-)

If done correctly, you'd never know they were used (unless obvious cues were remaining in the photo).

I understand -- but it seems like a flash is a pretty basic piece of equipment. Even an onboard flash would work for this challenge (though not as effectively).

As to how many people WANT to learn how to work with it: I didn't want to work with SPAM, but I did. :P

(holy crap!! that was a 6.8?? I know it was basic editing, but still! Good idea -- lousy shot!)

Ok -- so this went over like a lead balloon.

I still think it's a great skill to have in your arsenal.

Another thought, however, is the side challenges. I think we should come up with some good learning side challenges. For instance, low key would have been a great one. People doing shots for a month, getting feedback, thoughts, ideas, AND THEN have it be a real challenge where people can have the opportunity to enter something. We'd have to have ground rules of not entering a shot similar to one you've done in the side challenge. Or maybe you can, just not an identical shot.

Anyway, the idea is to learn a bit before the challenge so you can hone your skills and then see how you do.

With so many challenges and so few entries these days I don't see that a 'learning challenge' would make much of a negative impact TBH.

Most current frequently entering users are not novices and could learn something new. I have had a Canon flash for years and never used it. Today I am getting my first flash for the Sony and I want to learn to use it, great timing! Great idea, Wendy.

Why don't we try it before knocking it back? That's the best way to find out.

If we can use our camera flash I'd give it a go.. seem to recall doing some really interesting stuff awhile back with w/camera flash in daylight. It's all about the settings, etc. Also, make it an Open Challenge so everyone can give it a try.
