Not so Extended any more? Missing gyabans and samanthas we used to have at DPC. Again, this is a personal choice.

I'm not one for anything too fancy, so I don't mind at all if one doesn't use the EE rules. I use them sometimes, but I've noticed that one doesn't need to go all out to do well.

And I don't miss gyaban or Samantha's creations at all, just saying. It's not that they're not good at what they do, it's just that their style is not mine.

Perhaps all the extended editing is so good you do not realise it is happening :)

For example the following photo is a combination of two photos - as both hares were not in focus in a single photo. This would not have been possible in standard editing.

However I do really enjoy seeing the amazing creations the likes of Gyaban and similar artists delight us with

You are right, Paul. I argued that myself some time ago ;)

Personally, that's the kind of thing I enjoy Extended for the most. Not to say I don't like more obvious and elaborate creations, but just to say that it's nice to always have a place for something you've put together that doesn't fit Standard editing.

I'm glad that there are more regular entries in the extended challenge. It's nice to remember that not all extended editing is obvious. But it's also nice having a place for the incredible creations.

I think it's becoming the best of both worlds. I used to not bothering entering a regular shot because it seemed like people were expecting the incredible/impossible and were not interested in the everyday. But there's a place for all of it, and the CAN live side by side, even.

I have always figured it wouldn't make any sense to slant my votes in a Minimal Editing challenge to favor the images that are most "obviously" minimally edited, so why would I want to favor the ones most "obviously" edited in an Extended Editing challenge? The goal is always the same: give the voters the best image you can within the rules. The only difference the rules make is how much you are allowed to mess around with post-processing in the given challenge.

I don't the majority of people were slanting one way or another (with a few exceptions).

I think people were just starting to expect samatha and gyaban type images and the others fell flat. But they're getting more used to a mix.

It's like the normal free studies. People expect higher quality in the free studies, so average shots score lower.

In all cases it is about finding, making, seeing pictures of interest and delight. For some of us life is getting short, but the fuse is getting longer.

That sounds ominous, dear... :-)

So it takes longer for us to explode?

My point still is that without gyaban and samantha there is no mix. We get occasionally great work by Mary Ann or Judi or Mark but overall there are no role models to aspire too. I have become lazy as well and don't even try any more.

PS The original idea of Extended FS was to learn techniques banned under Standard - multiple exposures, panoramas, composites, 3D. And as Marion said - why have another FS?

If people put their fabulous non-extended photos in Extended Freestudy, maybe Freestudy has become redundant?

Exactly. In a sense, we are all role models. And we are all capable of learning from them too, but if we all wanted to learn the same thing life (and this site) would be so short and so boring! Do what suits you!

If you want to learn, keep trying, keep viewing, voting and exploring everything out there. You never know what will strike you. Maybe one month you'll feel inspired to create a composite and another time not. It's good to have the option. Two options even. Two monthly FS and lots and lots of chances every month to post to a restricted topic. Fair enough.

I agree that I enjoy seeing "creations", so I try to do that.

Anyone want to tell me (brutal honesty is fine with me!) what's wrong with my entry?

Hey Lydia.. I think perhaps the subject matter didn't appeal to enough ppl. Pink flamingos have an enigma attached to them whereas they signify schlock. It was always a joke in Florida if you had them in your yard. In fact, two neighbors of mine kept switching these pink flamingos back and forth. It started as a birthday joke that got out of hand. Cracked me up when I would see those pink flamingos back in my neighbor's front yard again.. this went on for weeks. Anyway, the creative expression in your image is perfectly fine so I can't see where that would detract from it. Must be the flamingos. ;-)

I think it's wonderful that we have both the fs and extended fs .. and that in the extended we can just do what we want ..
was great to see two very beautiful photos do so well in the last extended fs .. that look very minimally edited .. Ellie and Wendy's gorgeous mice pics ..
of course Anita's blue ribbon was just plain magic ..
I didn't do so well but you can't please everyone ..!!.. ;)
