Very much so, but there are differences that are very hard to replicate without the soft/sharp exposure overlay. You can get close also by making a copy of the original and defocusing it in PS, then doing the overlay. My question would be, how can we REGULATE this challenge so people have to do it the hard way and learn something? :-)

Oooooh... I like this challenge idea! Right up my alley. Not that I’m an expert at it, but I love that effect. Maybe restrict Color-Efex filters for this challenge???

FWIW, I'm kinda scratching my head over the desire to force two separate originals. In the days when the effect was conceived, that was truly the only way to do it. Just because that was true then, doesn't mean we need to force ourselves to do it that way now. In fact, I would submit that using a single original is an inherently better process from a technical perspective. I've used it and similar techniques in the past to very good effect, and always used a single original, either with or without separate RAW processing.

Here’s my thoughts...

I’d rather have 1 picture - a flag that if Glamor Glow or a similar filter is used you will be disqualified.

Simple and straight forward.

Top 5 will get validated etc.

Well, my post was in answer to how it could be done, but I didn't think it was a call that it should be done.

However, I do think that it makes some sense to "challenge" people to do it with the minimal investment in hardware and software, rather than just taking any old image and buying* some one-step software to (sort-of) do it for you; you don't really learn anything about photography that way except maybe figure out what sort of picture might benefit from the look.

*assuming you can afford it and the hardware to run it

I think that this "effect" is even more obscure than Low Key and there was a huge problem with people knowing whether it fit (myself included).

I vote for something that's clear. Easy to understand.

I think some folks didn't enter and I know some folks didn't vote on Low Key because they didn't understand it.

What's wrong with "Five"? Or "Yellow"?

People understand what five and yellow mean, right?

This is a little like focus stacking but this sort of photo manipulation can be accomplished with Photomatix. I agree w/Robert & Lydia that it's too obscure to include as a challenge. We need things we all can relate to like five and yellow.

"Oooh, that sounds hard."
"What are you, yellow?"
