I'll be in the Chicago area for work from this upcoming Thursday, August 1st, to Wednesday August 7th. I am expecting to have the weekend free to explore and photograph. Anyone in the area that would like to show me the sights?

I'm about 1.5 hours north... would be fun to get together if we can figure out a plan.

I would be great to get together with both of you guys. Given it would be a road trip for you, Fritz, is there a day/time that would work best for your schedule? I am not sure there is anyone else very active in the Chicago area.

I am off on Fridays during the summer, so that would work, bit I suspect Steve will be tied up during the day. Could still do Friday evening. I'd have to look at Sat/Sun to see if we have any conflicts. It's not a long drive down, heck I used to commute to Des Plaines four days a week, LOL!

I could drive a bit on the weekend. My hope was some sightseeing in Chicago. Navy Pier, Downtown river (I saw the bean when I was there in February. Brrrr.), the usual tourist traps, but hoping you guys know of some stuff I won't find on my own. It's possible that I'll finish up early Friday, but it's hard to predict and I won't know until then.

Sadly, I have to work on Friday, but I could meetup Friday evening after work. If you let me know what you are most interested in shooting (e.g., landscapes, architecture, people, etc.) I will do my best to show the best side of the city.

We can just plan Saturday or Sunday. I'm still googling what there is that I want to see.

It's looking like Sat. is the best day for me this week.

That'll work. Any thoughts as to someplace an out of towner like me wouldn't think of? Remember, I'm not local, so "the red house near Margie's that used to be green" doesn't cut it.

Where in Chicago are you staying? Downtown, or 'burbs? That, I think will guide thinking on where to go.

Staying at a hotel in Bolingbrook, just off of I-55

Ah, West 'burbs... looking at weather, wondering if downtown in the afternoon would be something you'd want to do? We could go up to one of the observation decks and shoot sunset over the city. Been many years since I did that.

You mentioned seeing the river. I highly recommend taking an architecture boat tour to folks visiting Chicago. The boat goes up and down the river, and you get great views of the city from an interesting perspective. You also learn a lot about the city and its history. Some boats go through the locks and out onto Lake Michigan -- I thought the process of going through the locks was interesting and the city views from the lake are great. I generally suggest it to folks visiting the city, and many find it a hit point of their trip. There is also a new, relatively new river walk that is very nice.

The Art Institute is one of my favorite places in Chicago. If you like art, it is a world class museum. I love the Chicago Cultural Center (old public library across the street from the Bean). It's a beautiful space and often has some interesting exhibits going on. A day game at Wrigley is an experience if you are a baseball fan and maybe even if you are not. In general, on a nice summer weekend, the city is teeming with people -- something you might not have experienced in here in February. People watching along Michigan Avenue or out on Navy Pier is great.

If you like music, Chicago is known for the Blues -- consider Kingston Mines, Buddy Guy's Legends, or B.L.U.E.S.

I'd be up for this, too.

Sounds like we have a plan starting to come together... if we are doing downtown, I will probably take the train down from Milwaukee, just need to coordinate arrival time. It comes into Union Station, which is pretty convenient to most of the downtown area.

I'm likely to just drive and pay the downtown parking.

I have a parking spot near the Bean. I can walk or take public transportation about anywhere to meet up. Name the time and where you'd like to start, and I will be there. If anyone else out there would like to join Steve, Fritz and me, you'd be welcome.
