so what happed is that I ordered 35mm 1.4 art lens from best buy and they took the order and kept on shelf for 2 weeks and they came back saying we can not deliver. I got on a call with them and they swap that to Sigma 20mm 1.4 for same price.

Question: is 20mm a good deal for the price of $650 vs the retail price of $900? I wanted to get 35mm mostly for event photography but having 20mm, is that a bad choice? need some opinion :)

There is a huge difference between 20mm and 35mm, one is wide angle, the other is ultra wide, it will distort more, especially close up but will be better for city scapes, landscapes etc. The 35mm A series is very nice and has virtually no distortion even close up, they are 2 different lenses for 2 different jobs IMHO. Both sell for the same price here in the UK and both are awesome lenses, but you either want 35mm or you want 20mm it's not really a compromise.

Personally, I think the 20mm is a more useful lens than the 35 on a FF camera where you always have the option of CROPPING to 35mm angular limitation with a hardly noticeable loss of quality. It will be VERY versatile in crowd scenes and reception scened if you learn to think in terms of keeping the important faces in from the edges a way.

Thank you Robert! Point taken and yes agreed, in a tight crowed wide angle does help.

Others have focused on the use case, so I'll mainly focus on the value. I own the 20/1.4 Art and the 50/1.4 Art, and would not part with either of them. The 20mm is a stunner, and if you can get it for $650 that is one hell of a value. The 20/1.4 Art is so good that I will not hesitate to shoot night skies at f/2.0, although I like the results better (less bat-wings in the far corners) at f/2.8. Be aware that the 20/1.4 Art has a *really* large front element and a permanently-attached lens hood, thus it will not take standard screw-in filters.

Thank you Fritz! yes I read about the hood the only thing that I was bothering me was moving down from 35 to 20 but yes price was one of the factor where they drop down the price by $250 because it was their mistake.
