The first lens I bought for my first DSLR was the 50mm 1.8. It's been years since I used that lens but for some reason I went out with it on my camera today and left the 18-150mm zoom in my bag. Unfortunately when the opportunity for a great shot of a dog chasing a drone came up I didn't have time to change lenses and came away with really bad shots.
A lot of people dislike superzoom lenses because of the inferior image quality but they certainly have their uses.

| Oh, I hear ya! I'm feeling the most AMAZING sense of liberation since I put the FF Sony a7r out to pasture and purchased a Canon SX70 superzoom. The image quality isn't up to the FF but it's fine for what I do, I no longer have to carry kit around with me, the optical stabilization is fantastic (my hands are getting palsied), AND the 35mm-equivalent range is from 23mm to 1362mm. Yup, THIRTEEN HUNDRED MM! It's just awesome :-) |

Sometimes I envy you but I'd miss things like my Lensbaby and my fisheye lens. And I could never cope with anything close to 1362mm because my hands are far too shaky to get decent shots, even with the best stabilizer.
On the other hand I've never been prepared to carry a heavy camera bag anywhere. Until I bought my EOS M50 I rarely even carried a spare lens.

However, Robert  Bear_music has the best of both worlds as I've kept my Sony A7ii plus various lenses we've acquired over the years, which he can use if he wants to shoot with a Lensbaby, fisheye, or macro etc. That said I did join him in getting a Canon SX70 for those times when I wanted to travel light, so I also have the best of both worlds!! |

| It happens. I usually keep a 14-150 on my camera, but occasionally I've missed that fleeting shot when I had the wideangle mounted. and occasionally I've gotten the shot. |

It's funny because a wide angle might have worked. The activity moved between too near and too far so that in some of my shots everything was too small and in others part of what I wanted was outside the frame. 50mm was just the worst possible focal length.

Personally I have never understood some people's obsession with prime lenses, ESPECIALLY that damn 50mm lens. I've had one three different times throughout my time, kept trying to find the magic in one as I improved and learned, but no thanks. I got one of the Nikkor 18-200s when they first came out, and I've had a superzoom as my walkaround lens ever since. Having gone full frame, I have a 28-300, but that's basically the same as the DX 18-200. I do have a 16-35 that I like to play with occasionally, but 95% of my work is done with the superzoom.
I do also have a 105mm f2.8 that I kind of like but I virtually never use it. I should prolly sell it.

Sometimes I want shallower DOF than my zooms allow, but for the most part I'm happy with what they give me. I already bought the tiny EF-M 28mm lens, but it offers a couple of things that my 50mm doesn't - it's a macro lens and it has a ring light built in which can be useful when I'm playing with macros in a restaurant or other dark place. And I can't help feeling that I'd have been better of with that on my camera yesterday instead of the 50mm lens.
The Silver Lining
What happened yesterday will probably save me money because I've been feeling a craving for some faster glass - either upgrading my 50mm to the newer STM version or buying the EF-M 32mm F1.4, but after this I'm not going to rush into any purchases. Well none other than the EF-M 11-22mm for those times when I want something wider. I've got the EF-S 10-20mm, but it's almost as big as my M50 so I don't really use it any more. In recent times I've confined my wide angle use to the Tokina 10-17mm fisheye which is smaller and lighter, and it's a fun lens to use, but sometimes it's not the best option, so a small wide angle zoom would be nice. And it would save me having to use an adapter, which saves size and weight.
On the whole I've never been one for primes. I bought an EF-S 24mm pancake lens years ago, but I've hardly ever used that either and I recently realised that I never even added it to my equipment list - so it's never been used for a challenge. The only prime that gets a fair amount of use is my 60mm macro, but I usually only use it at home.
My real problem right now is a bit of GAS - the result of spending too much time in the DPReview forums when I was trying to decide which mirrorless camera to buy. That and the fact that I find my EF-M 18-150mm a bit on the soft side. My EF-S 18-135mm lens is quite a bit sharper, but I'm finding carrying that on my 80D a bit heavy for everyday use, which is why I'm using mirrorless most of the time.
