I don't know much about anything, but I can send out good vibes to Mita and those who contribute their knowledge and help, so I will. Thanks.

Langdon, your vision took this site a long way, and made better photographers out of so many people. We all got to study and learn from so many greats. Mita, I'm so looking forward to see where you pilot us from here. May your fresh vision take this site to new places with the technology available. Bear, thanks for being the glue that held this site together over the past few years!!

Thank you Langdon for everything you've done, this is truly a site that changed my life!

It's really exciting to see how the site will progress, thank you Mitalapo for taking over the wheel!

Good news all around! Thanks Langdon for planting that seed and to Mita for not letting it die.
And to everyone in general, a big thanks for helping me along on my photography journey. I'm in & out a lot around here but will continue to hang on as long as this place does :)

Thanks to Langdon for all those years, and thanks to all the voluntary support especially by the Bear and the General and Johanna and others.
But mostly thanks to Mita for taking this on and maybe developing some fixes for old age while there’s still time.

Robert has carried most of the heavy lifting during these years being both the active Administrator and an SC leader. I certainly hope we can continue to count on his good service to this community.

Langdon has graciously agreed to continue support us during the coming months as we make our first steps in mastering the ins and outs of the site code, data and interfaces. Your patience and support during this transition process is greatly appreciated.

Robert's service as active Administrator when needed has been exceptional. He always comes through for me and I'm sure for others as well. It's comforting to know there's someone you can count on when needed. I'm hoping Mita can master the site code, it's a big responsibility but I'm sure he will handle it well. This is a new chapter in the DPC book for everyone and we're all looking forward to the years ahead. Go DPC!!!

Happy Days! This is wonderful news. Thanks to Langdon for creating this treasure and for maintaining it with integrity, even when you did not have the time or heart for it.
Bear Music, thank you for being the heart and soul of this listing ship. ..and to all of those who volunteered in running this place throughout the years. Thanks to Mita for
your optimism and for giving us an extended life. Please share your vision and goals !

And, for the record, I'm on the West Coast for several weeks doing family stuff and only checking in sporadically, in case anyone notices :-) Place seems to be doing fine without me...

So what are the changes that are going to happen?

In all honesty, what really is going to happen? When it was in it's prime, everyone used camera's and we had hundreds upon hundreds in each challenge that happened, now their is maybe 20/30 people . Then technology took charge and suddenly crisp, clean, ultra saturated shots came out of a phone.

Everyone has lost job's and careers (Real Estate, Restaurants, Family Photos)
We now do not lug all our lighting equipment, with assistants to hold silver discs, to a shoot to a restaurant to get the perfect food shot, face profile, head-shots, etc, . It can be done in a snap on a phone and 1 live shot can retrieve 30 shots in 1 second.

I know that when film went out and digital came in, the same questions was asked. I was talking to a photographer the other month, who show's in galleries (blah blah he brags a lot etc) he is a die hard digital camera person, but still with lights, assistants, colour boards, white boards. But HE just took some jobs, on teaching restaurants on how to take phone shots of food for their restaurant. He said it was the only way to make money these days.

I am not being negative, as I have the brain cell of an amoeba when ti comes to cell phones and modern photography.

But,,,

What are the changes that are going to bring new people in, to make this what it was in it's hey day, or to bring it into a new hey day?

I'm finally at a computer today...Such good news all around. Thank you Langdon for all that you have done to create this wonderful site. I'm hoping that you will still be around after you officially hand off the torch.

Good luck Mita - this is a tough bunch to please. But I'm excited for the upcoming changes...you can count on me to help in anyway that I can.

Bear - Couldn't have done it without you...thank you for all your time and energies.

Art - don't steal the torch and burn the village .... yet!!!

So pretty new colours on the website and Instagram worth pictures, as phones, tablets, mobile add filters to enhance what is all ready on the screens ?

I do get what you are saying, I really do.

But it is the same as when people developed their film and it took days, where aghast at digital cameras that could take 100/s of photos instead of 12-24 and edit them in hours, to now when a phone cane take 1,000 pics a second and each one if picture perfect.

I get it, I do. But what are the changes? What better suits the photographers of today? Is instant gratification, ((unless you are now in Australia, as the 'likes' for instant photos has now been removed) and all the filtered photos's on Instagram have been removed, and people are suddenly finding that they have to get a real job.

Which way will this go? What are the changes, no one has said much about it, bar "It will suit the way photographers are consumed today"

I am really not trying to be an arsehole on this, but is everyone going with the blanket statement of """" freshen and modernize the website and make it tablet/mobile-friendly so it better suits the way photographs are consumed today"""""

What does that mean??? Any explanation or broadening the horizons, rather than a blanket statement .

Personally, I'm (mostly) fine with it as-is -- I don't really use "mobile" features.

However, instead of asking exactly what's planned (I don't know) perhaps you could offer some ideas YOU think would make the site "better" ...

I'm certain that Mita has some ideas, as well as probably going to reach out to membership to get some ideas.

But regardless of what changes are made, we need to grow forward, incorporating present and evolving changes to "photography". DPC will never again be what it used to be.

But perhaps it can be better :)
07/24/2019 01:11:28 AM · #73
To be honest these days I am just happy that DPC still exists and because of Mita it will go on. I am no longer fussed what it looks like and whether it will attract the so called "influencers" (what a horrible word!) or any new mobile happy shooters. The world has changed in the last 16 years and I don't expect the past to be reproduced and I don't think there is much chance to compete with the big photo community Web sites with big budgets. And from the posts it looks that Mita doesn't have any helpers so far so how can you expect big changes???

There are not going to be any radical changes in the organization and scope of the site. It will remain a challenge site, it will continue to maintain a forum, it will seek to continue doing what it does now but strive to do it better. When we talk about "the way photos are consumed today" we just mean that there's been something of a paradigm shift towards portable devices and we need to accommodate that shift if we are to survive. This means making DPC easier to keep up with on portable devices. We expect to be able to better code DPL and make it a regular feature of our collective participation, and we're wide open to suggestions on how to bring peer-to-peer interaction and mentorship back to the forefront the way they used to be.

What WILL be changed in the relatively short run (it will take several months at least) is the actual code that IS the heart of the site. All our technical difficulties have been due to antique coding (it was cutting-edge in 2001) that has to be massaged in a hands-on way by someone familiar with it. Every attempt to change (or correct) something has resulted in unintended consequences in unexpected corners of the code, and it has taken Langdon et al way too much time to deal with. That's all gonna get stripped away, the databases will be reorganized, the coding will be more modular so changes and additions can be more easily implemented, and when THAT's done we're off to the races.

Don't worry that your community is going to try to morph into something hip or trendy; there's enough of that out there. Our goal is to be streamlined, user-friendly, and welcoming to newcomers.

I'm saying all this without running it by Mita (I'm off on vacation) but I believe it represents where he's going with this, and I've bee part of the planning from the beginning...

Bear have said it well.

Following Juliet's comment I now realize that when we state that the intent is to "make the site mobile friendly" it may have dual meaning, because mobile devices are both display devices and camera devices at the same time. So to clarify, what we mean is to make the site shows better on mobile phones and tablets. What we do not mean is to make the site friendlier to images taken by mobile phones compared to images taken by other means.
