Hey guys,
As some of you know I'll be going to Hawaii soon and I will be creating a video while I'm out there. To avoid AWFUL audio I'm going to be getting a mic for my camera. Being that I don't normally do video this is not something I really want to spend a ton of money on.
Rode mics are about $115 (depending where you get them from). I was looking around and found a few off brand stuff for around 30 bucks... Are these even reliable?
Any help would be great! |

I'm looking to just use it for a "vlog" type of video. I thought about getting an H1n and doing a lav but I don't want to be wired up all day. I just don't know how often I'll be using it. Once in a blue moon kinda thing. And so I figure I don't want to spend extra money on a rarely used item.
Marac, I thought about it but I'm already spending a ton of money on the trip itself and I'm spending a good amount of money on the lens I'm renting. And being that the vast majority of my camera usage will be images and not video it'll only be there as a cherry on top sort of thing which is why I'm shying away from the $100+ option. |

If you are already spending a bundle on the trip then the "good" mic won't be that big an additional cost, and probably not that much more than the "cheap" mic. I know you'll be frustrated if, after all that travel and preparation, you end up with lousy audio.
Maybe check the after-market for those mics, either to get one used for less, or to see if it's reasonable to sell yours after the trip. |

This isn't a bad idea. And you're right... I'd be very upset if I come back to some crappy audio after spending money to get something better than what the camera gets.

Rode make SmartLav mics for your phone.
Just look for a recording app.
Rode have one for the iPhone but there are others for Android.
Use the mic on the camera and sync in post.
You could give this a try by just using your headphones for your current phone.
I have made some lav mics out of a couple of old Samsung headsets and they are really good.
Not a lot of difference between them and the Rode Smart Lav
I cut off the earbuds and used the foam from one earbud and sewed it around the mic to help with wind.
Sew it to a tie clip and you have a cheap lav that works with your phone.
Get a bit of fluffy material and make a deadcat for outside.
I was using homemade lavs with a Zoom H4n but many videographers use phones for weddings.
Worth having a play with this and see if it works for you.
Could be all you need.

Adapter
There are two adapters, just linked one for information but check which one you need.
This means the Lav can now be used with your phone or if you add the adapter you can connect it to a Zoom H1n or directly to your camera.
Maybe not what you are after but worth a look.

$30 will get you lower quality audion than your camera's built-in mic. Look around on the Ebays for Rodes. |
