Hey all, I found this egg at the bottom of a large pine tree in my front yard. It looks like a corvid stole it and pecked it open to get at the contents. Trying to identity what kind of bird it may have belonged to - I suspect a raptor but so far doesn't seem to match the images I've seen for redtail, red-shouldered, sharp-shinned or rough-legged hawks, Possibly an owl's egg?

The white egg in the pic at top is a grade large chicken egg, for size comparison. Will post images once I upload them, been so long since I've done that!

Wondering if it might be a duck egg?

ETA: Ahhh, take a look at Canada Goose eggs, they have a very similar look.

Actually a hunter friend has suggested wild turkey, and there are indeed plenty of them around. The size and speckling are bang on for turkey. Canada Goose foes look close but they're huge.

Ah never thought of turkey. Yep, we have shedloads of 'em around here too!

Does the ornithology lab at Cornell have a guide to eggs? I know they have a gazillion audio tracks of bird calls ...

Well, before you crow too much about your social media discipline, neither do I. :-)

Well if you can't keep it together you'll have to move ova and make room for someone else.

I was on my way to the control room to SMITE Kirbic for Intentional Infliction of Lousy Puns, but I fell over and broke my leg just before I got to the buzzard... Am I hoist by my own Petrel?

I suppose now you'll just sit around puffin on a good cigar.

Almost thought the thread was dead, and was about to brood... but you came through in the clutch!

And of course Kirbic, Dodo that he is, failed to acknowledge my wonderful flight of punditry. I am not EMUsed; the insult is hard to swallow :-(

Enough grousing -- sometimes you have to goose him to get him to owl out loud, and after that he may give up and say he's quite finched; eider that or take penguin hand and write you a nasty note.
