A couple of South African camera sites have the M5 listed as discontinued and one states that "there are no replacements or alternatives available". Although I wasn't considering buying such an outdated body, I had considered the M50, only I felt that it was a step backwards from my 80D and have been keeping a lookout for an update to the M5.

A few DPC members have suggested I move to the Fujifilm X-T30, and it's certainly an option, but will cost me a lot more than the Canon. While the choice of lenses is better, they're a lot more expensive too and I can't find a source of an adapter for using Canon lenses on the Fuji in South Africa. However, if Canon doesn't update the M5 soon, I'll be forced to go for the Fuji.

I've been unable to find any confirmation outside South Africa that the M5 is discontinued. Does anyone know whether it's true?

I went out shooting with 2 other people and we exchanged lenses on our cameras. m friend uses an M50 with adaptor. And my other friend has the Sony a7III. The M50 is amazing for the price and better than my 70d. Our pictures were similar in result with the same lenses.

I still see it listed on Canon USA's site. So it's still a current product for now. But it was introduced 2 1/2 years ago, so it may be due for replacement in their lineup. Looks like the camera is available for a sweet price. If it had been around earlier, I may have stuck with Canon and not moved to Micro 4/3. Perhaps it isn't a good seller in your own area so they have stopped carrying it there. I think a more important question is if this lens type is going to still be around?

I was wondering about the lenses too, though I understand that Canon recently introduced a new M lens - I think the 32mm F1.4 - which is supposed to be very good. And I'll still have the lenses I use with my 80D, so I'd be able to use some of those with the M, just not the heavier ones!

As for the M5, some of the rumours about a replacement go back to the second half of 2018 and there have been more recent ones so I don't know what to believe.

Sounds good. I'll probably pop into the camera shop I usually buy from and see what info I can get. They seem to have removed the M5 from their website but the M50 is still there.

Interesting rumor regarding the M system. It's CR1 so it may be inaccurate, but does seem to follow Canon's own signalling that they are going to continue to invest in that system.

That's quite encouraging. I don't think I want to wait until August, so I'll probably go ahead and buy the M50. At least it makes me feel confident that there will be a better model if/when I want to upgrade.

I'm really curious about the new lenses that are mentioned.

I've just been watching some videos about the M50 and one of the things I like is that the time lapse video it offers seems to be superior to what I can do on my 80D. Maybe I'll use it more once I don't have to worry about keeping the light constant.

Although Canon are expected to announce the M5 mark II in late August I've decided to buy the M50. I'm off to the camera shop in a little while.

Thanks.

I've got the first battery charging now so I haven't switched the camera on yet. It's after 9pm so I don't think I'll use the camera until tomorrow - other than setting things like date and time, of course.
