Seems our friends at Adobe are up to their usual money grab antics again.

I can still see the £9.98 option, but not everyone can. For the limited amount of times I use Photoshop and the fact that I loathe LR I can see myself moving 100% to CaptureOne, if Adobe really are doubling the price. I don't need/want 1TB of online storage.

The cheap option is still showing for me - plan for Africa - but that's a bit of a worry. I'm still using CS5, but I've been threatening to upgrade for some time, so that could be what makes me decide not to do it.

I suggest don't ever un-install that ... :-(

Ask yourself exactly what features found only in the Cloud version are really necessary to your normal processing (and which can't be accomplished with some other -- often free -- software) before upgrading.

Mine just renewed @9.99, but if I go to the Adobe site it shows the doubled price if I'm not signed in. I've had the plan since the start. I only use Photoshop as I too loath lightroom. I've tried several times to like it or find it useful but nope...can't stand it. I'm good with PS and bridge. So maybe just for new joiners in the US they're trying it out? ExposureX4 from Alien Skin is nice, and getting better. I'm hoping they never sell out to Adobe.

There are a couple of problems:

1. Modern cameras, including my 80D, aren't compatible with CS5's version of ACR meaning I'm forced to convert all my RAW files to DNG before I can process them. That's a waste of both time and hard drive space.

2. One of my updates (possibly the move from Elements to PS) was done on a long forgotten special and every time I've had to reinstall Photoshop since then it's come up with a problem validating the license number. It usually takes Adobe a few days to sort that mess out. As my computer feels like it's on its last legs, that's a problem I could be facing quite soon.

There are some newer features in PS that I'm keen to have, but I'm not sure they're worth the extra expense. Maybe I should start looking at other options.

I heard about this in another thread. Not sure it has hit Australia yet but if they double the cost I will have to look elsewhere. One thing I suggested in the other thread ( who wasn’t an extensive user) is that if they were a Mac user the Photos app on a Mac is not as lame as was first thought. It can actually do quite a bit. Using a folder structure you can manage your files. Like Lightroom you can have the same shot in a “ favourites” folder or a “ special events “ etc. It will do RAW. Is generally up to date with latest cameras etc. It wouldn’t be everyone’s cup of tea but is a viable alternative.
I would image by this time there is also a Windows type equivalent.
As I say - it’s not a heavy hitter but if Adobe are going to increase prices it may have people looking more closely at alternatives.

Any recommendations for a decent program that can work with RAW files for the latest cameras? I'm considering buying either Canon M50 or Fujifilm XT30, so I downloaded some RAW files yesterday to see what they look like. I was able to convert the Canon RAW to DNG using Adobe software, but the latest version doesn't work for the Fuji.

One essential is that I have a program which works with Nik software. I use it for most of my photos.

One RAW converter to look at is Luminar ($79). It launched in late 2018, and has been significantly updated since. It has both a good RAW conversion engine and also now has a library function. I have not played with it, being firmly a Lr/Ps kinda guy. A couple other alternates are On1 Raw ($119) and Capture1 Pro ($299).

Thanks Kirbic. Do any of those work with Nik, or would I still have to use Photoshop after converting my files?

As I want to buy a new camera and probably will need a new computer too, I really don't feel like spending a lot of money on software if I don't have to. Maybe if I buy the Fuji it would be best to use JPG until Adobe updates their DNG converter again.

Just revisiting an older thread.
Has anyone been using Capture One Pro? Some people ( in other threads) were posting this as an option to Lightroom. It seems good - but my only concern is (in Australia at least) it offers an outright price ( $299) but also has a subscription model. To me this would indicate this is the direction they are heading. Lightroom also had an outright price as well as subscription - before they went totally subscription. Is this the way Capture One is headed? If this is the case it is simple a matter of which program you feel is better rather than based on whether it is subscription or not.

It's not easy to predict shifts in business models, since the winds can change suddenly due to shakeups in management. You do have to believe that they are looking at Adobe, seeing record revenues, and asking "why not us?"
Bottom line, choose what you are most comfortable with and stick with it. The front runners are all pretty good, and pricing, whether it be subscription or outright purchase, is reasonable.
