Recently Tony Northrup posted a relatively controversial VIDEO claiming that ISO is totally fake!
I blindly took this as gospel until I saw this VIDEO.
And just for the record, HERE is Fstopper's take.
So what do you guys think? |

this is a great example of "manufactured dissent"
the only real place where Tony was wrong is when he says you can brighten your ISO 100 image and have it look exactly the same as a higher ISO. In reality the ISO 100 photo will be a little more noisy, but not as noisy as you think. The second video explains why this is so.
Tony's main point that ISO, International Standards Organization, is no longer using the ISO standard, is absolutely correct.
ISO 100 means no brightening is done to the image in camera. that is all it means. If one camera is more sensitive to light, then its ISO 100 photo will be more exposed than the other camera's ISO 100 photo.
So yes, ISO is fake in digital cameras. But you should still use it. :) |

Bingo!
I agree with Don's take on this 100%. Camera manufacturers are certainly taking liberties with ISO ratings, no secret there. The ISO setting is still there because you do still need to "scale" the data so that you don't wind up compressing all your values toward the low end, essentially ending up with 8 bits of resolution, or even less. |

What Don said.
Sometimes it is fun to underexpose at 100 ISO and then boost it up in post, especially for B&W high contrast shots. Challenge suggestion maybe? |

Yep.
Comparing it from one manufacturer to another brings out the disparity in the "standard", but shoot the same image separated by a few thousand ISO and its easy to tell the difference.
Some manufacturers are decidedly more affected by noise in the higher ISOs than others.
So....fake? No, but definitely not like it used to be.

As much as what Northtrop said made sense, there was a tone of illogic especially when it came to the notion of simply shooting everything at ISO100. It just did notmake sense especially being in landscape photography.
Learnt something as well from this video
