I submitted a photo to the Symbolism challenge, It has had 42 views... Not bad Only 20 Votes? hmm do half of the people not vote? Whats worse ZERO comments. I rejoined this sight to be able to critique and learn from others. Oh by the way the picture is only averaging a 4.9 seems like I could get some feed back on how to improve... I have voted for 100% of the photos in all open contest and have commented on Many.

Just wondering if maybe that's why I have not submitted to this site in a long time..

Hi Vince. Don't take it personally. Participation is less than it used to be a few years back. But there are still plenty of brilliant people here with great ideas and a bunch of experience. You are more than welcome to add to this post or create a new one once the voting in the challenge is finished and I'm sure you can get some constructive feedback.

Your thread made me think about my own perceptions. Then I remembered that the "Challenges" tab at the top of the DPC website has a "Challenge History" option. The last two columns show number of comments and average comments (number of comments divided by number of entries, I think). My experience is that commenting tends to be stronger toward the end of a challenge and sparser in the first few days. Symbolism still goes all the way to Feb 3 before voting ends. My other commitments have kept me from even looking at those entries yet.

Volume of commenting during challenges generally is not as high as it used to be. However, the side challenges do generate comments and interaction. And images that receive a comment outside of challenge voting times show up in the "Photos" tab under the "Browse" option (I leave mine defaulted to "Browse Recently Commented On" pictures). Fair amount of activity there. When I comment, I find that it causes me to learn a lot more about the image and about myself as I consider all the factors influencing how I feel about what I see. So I like to encourage commenting as a productive and useful exercise even if not fully reciprocated.

Usually I see fewer comments on my images that are generating low votes. Some of the threads about voting and commenting mention that some people find it more comfortable to write what the feel/perceive about an image when they enjoy it compared to when they don't. Glad you are submitting, voting, and commenting. That is valuable all around. Looking forward to your continued participation.

I often feel guilty about how rarely I leave comments, but most of the time when I look at photos (including ones I love) I don't know how to express my feelings about them.

I'd like to leave more comments but my learning of english language is very bad so I avoid to write nonsense

For example: in one of my last photos I included in the title the word "bicycle" but written "bycicle"; thanks to Lydia that corrected me

Sisto, not sure where you are from... but I am sure my mastering of your language is not so good. Thank God for Google translate... you can comment anytime. I welcome criticism it is the only way to grow. Btw I am married 42 years to a German girl so trying to figure out what she writes helps me.

I'm pretty sure that a lot of people who DO vote look at an image more than once ... I actually take a wide disparity between "views" and "votes" as a good thing, in that it can mean that people find something interesting-enough about the picture to give it a second look.

Participation is lower than in "the old days" in terms of quantity, but I think the quality is as good or better ...

What I find interesting is that there is a very large viewership of this website of individuals who are not participating. If you go to "Community", "Who's Online" it will show you what members are online at any given time. It also shows how many "guests" are on the site at any given time. I usually see 2-3 hundred onlookers. That tells me DPC is more popular than the voting statistics imply.

In the past some of those "guests" were bots trying to grab info ... I don't know for sure if the (relatively) recent security update has blocked all such activity; they also might be people coming from a search result hitting a keyword or title ...

I think that's how I found this site over a decade ago. I was blown away and falling over myself to join, so hopefully, of the 327 guests online at this moment, some of them might like what they see.

To clarify, I meant that after the challenge was complete, your image would be known so other DPC members could tell you directly what they think. During the challenge it needs to remain confidential, tight-lipped, stealth, under wraps, classified, hush-hush, off the record, unknown, for your eyes only, etc. ... ;P
