| I am somewhat confused about Extended Free Studies. I thought the purpose of them was to allow for the use of processing techniques and creative expression that were not permitted in the regular monthly free studies. Therefore, when I look at the entries in this category I am expecting that freedom expressed. To my surprise many, if not most, of the entries do not follow this concept and could have been entered in the regular Free study. Not to say that there aren’t some outstanding images of this type but I do not feel they are in the spirit of the challenge title. So I have a conundrum when it comes to voting. I generally give the edge to the compositions that show the creativity and technical ability that this challenge offers. Do you all feel the same way or should I disregard the intentions of the challenge and vote as if it is a regular Free study? |

| My opinion only, of course, but I always saw the Extended Free Study as an additional Free Study, but with latitude to use Extended editing rules if you wanted to. In such challenges, I don't expect to see *only* extended-edited images in those challenges, nor do I vote down any images due to perceived lack of extended-editing techniques. I see it as us having 2 free studies per month, with less editing restrictions on one of them. Any entrant has the choice to make use of the latitude, or not. |

| One could even enter a "Minimal", non-edited entry if so desired. At least that's what I've always been told. |

And just because something looks as if it could have been entered in a regular FS or other standard editing challenge, doesn't mean that it could have been. Occasionally I get an idea that is suited to obvious altered reality. But my real pleasure when it comes to composites (speaking of what I like to do, not necessarily what I admire most in others' work) is in creating pieces that LOOK real . . . but were not. For that reason, when I vote in the Extended Free Studies, I do essentially treat it as "as an additional Free Study, but with latitude to use Extended editing rules if you wanted to" as  krnodil said. |

| I just look for photos that I like. The only time I think about the ruleset is if the photo looks unreal. If a photo looks unreal in Standard editing, I might give more points for creating that illusion in a standard ruleset. |

I'll echo what's being said here; Extended Free Studies were created to give folks who want to use the full arsenal of tools on a subject of their own choice a place in which they could play. It was never our intention that ONLY "extended" images could be entered. In the end, it's up to the voters to choose the images they like best, regardless of the tools used to create them.
And, as an aside and speaking as one who has to validate the darn things, let me say that I'm frequently surprised to find out that what I had thought was a "straight" image turns out to be a skilfully done composite. |

| I just stuck a lightning photo I had from months ago,onto a standard photo. Nothing spectacular at all really. But it gave me a chance to stick two photos together and make it pleasing to MY eye and concept. It was a fun learning experience. |

| Thank you for your opinions. I will look at the Extended Free Study in a different way. It’s like traveling; there are many ways to get to the same place. Pick the route and enjoy the ride! |
