"Many of the world's greatest art works use symbols to portray the "truth" about something that mere realism cannot portray. Use symbols in a photograph to help communicate a deeper truth."

This means nothing to me.

Dang it.

I need someone to tell me what to shoot.

Arg.

Deeper truth.

Yeah... Deeper truth.

Help!

If I took you urban exploring with me I guarantee you would find a deeper truth.

I like that the challenge description has "truth" in parentheses.

Oh. I understand reality quite well. It's the suggestion that "mere reality" cannot portray truth.

What's up with that? What am I to shoot?

I've already said that I'm shallow.

How could one symbolize the concept of shallow?

Well, you have nearly two weeks to figure it out.

I shot this during (or just after) the recent Supreme Court hearings, and wouldn't have hesitated to enter it into this type of challenge ... it DOESN'T mean you can't shoot "real" things ...

"OK, That's A Wrap"

Actually, if you haven't noticed, I do this a lot, whether the challenge description calls for it or not ...

As for symbolizing "shallow" I think a shot of any politician talking would do ... :-(

Paul gets it! Here are a few tips:

Symbolic Objects
Objects are often used to symbolize something else:

A chain can symbolize the coming together of two things.
A ladder can represent the relationship between heaven and earth or ascension.
A mirror can denote the sun but when it is broken, it can represent an unhappy union or a separation.

Don't let that description fool you. Symbolism is actually the simplest kind of art. Thing a stands for thing b. A Rose is a symbol of love. A gravestone is a symbol of death. A cross is a symbol of sacrifice. A train is a symbol of moving on, or losing someone.

Those little paired elevated pointy symbols around the word "truth" are more often known as quotation marks (rather than parentheses).

There is a hand gesture known as making air quotes that might fit into an image for this challenge. But that might need to rely heavily on the title along with the image. There is a separate hand gesture I might receive in response to this post.

that's the thing about symbols. A symbol can stand for anything, as long as the person looking at it knows that's what it stands for.

Oops. That would be a misteak if I made misteaks, but I don't.

In other words, there are no guarantees (knowing what a symbol stands for).
