I'm sure this has been a common comparison around here. i was gonna buy a 20d but decided its better to put that money towards lenses etc. I don't have any lenses yet, and both the rebel and d70 will provide me with plenty to learn on (my film slr is fully manual- so most of the new controls im only kind of familiar with). My bigger concern is what kind of system to buy into. I'm just havin a super hard time deciding. what are nikon's lens systems strengths/weaknesses vs. canons?

I really liked the 18-70 range of the kit lens, and it has good review as well, so seemed a good start. I am thinking of buying a 70-300 Sigma later to complement it.

Plus a liked the full control of the D70 versus some blocked features on the 300D.

And the look and feel.

For me the only advantage of the 300D would have been the super smooth ISO100.

I may be off, but isn't considered more "fair" to contrast the D70 and 10D?

either camera is good for me, i'm more interested in people's opinions about the lens systems.

Very possibly ...

I think originally I'd have matched the 10D vs the D100 and the 300D vs the D70. I think those were the intended markets.

Now I would think the D100 is out of the running and the D70 would sit somewhere between the 300D and the 10D in where it is being aimed.

I think the comparission could be between all three, and then weigh up both price and features. I imagine the 10D must be close to the D70 in price now???

this link:

has tested just about all of the canon lenses, I imagine thhe nikon, too. It's a bit technical and I haven't studied it, but it may be helpful.

edit: i just checked th epricegrabber link, the best price onthe D70 is 1134.95
the best on the 10D $1095
of course, no lens with the 10D, so add $200 or so for a comparable lens. pretty close

Both cameras are excellent. I think D70 is better then 300D, but I have chosen the 20D. The best is to try them in a store, - feel the cameras in your hands. Search on the DPC forums and on the net, there is a lot of info available on the subject. Since you are going to invest in lenses you are choosing not just a camera but a system ... nobody is going to make the decision for you - I went through this and I know the pain :(

From a perspective of my own experience your best bet is to toss a coin and stop to worry if you cannot make a decision in a week.

One important thing to remember, despite what ever else anyone tells you ....

You won;t go wrong with the 300D, 10D, D70 ... they are all exceptional cameras :)

I was in the same boat as you. I had decided to get a 20D with the 17-40 F4 L, 70-200 F4 L and the 50 1.4 USM.

Did I really, really, really need the 20D's features? Really? Nope. Did the lens range give good coverage? Not really with that 40 to 70 gap. How about my light, were my chosen lenses fast? Not really @ F4.

So what could I get when I went Nikon? Is Nikon worse than Canon? Not really no. Is 6mp enough? For me it was (when I double the size of D70 files shot with good lenses I can still use it for a good enormous print). Now, what lenses can I get for my 20D budget?
18-70 DX, not much slower compared to the 17-40. The quality is a bit less, but still way above average and the advantage is that it covers the 40-70 gap!
70-200 VR F2.8 with a 3 stop advantage because of the VR. That is four stops faster compared to the 70-200 F4 L! Whooaaa!
AF 50 1.4 : Excellent prime.
Nikon's flash system on the D70 is way better than the one on the 300D and 10D, the body felt more at home compared to the 10D and 20D.

I'd say that most Nikkors equal Canon's quality, where the budget lenses perform better compared to Canon's budget lenses.
Nikon nowadays has plenty AF-S (=USM) and VR (=IS) lenses and still expanding that range, because this is where they fall behind Canon.
Tilt/shift, macro, special portrait, wideangle, fast tele, mirror etc lenses are all in Nikon's line-up, just like Canon.

The question is: What lenses do YOU need?

most important lens for me is fisheye, which nikon has advantage in, i feel canons advantage in everythign else though. would like to get my 50-200 range covered soon without spendin a ton.

I bought the D70 less than 2 weeks ago and went through the same thing, a couple of things to consider.

The D70 is new on the market and I would think it will be well supported if you decide to upgrade later and wanted to take those lenes with you.

The 300D flash has a lack of control where the D70 has plenty.

The 300D is about to be superseded I believe just in time for Xmas so if you wanted to go Canon it might be better to wait until then when you could buy the new model or get the 300D at a special runout price.

I am still learning but I love the crisp images I'm getting from the D70.

Goodluck....

I was totally sold on the Nikon D70 and determined to get one. My decision in favour of a 300D, in the end was mainly influenced by two things. 1. The greater ISO range and quality of noise, and 2. the full size sensor of the 1Ds that who knows one day I might perhaps aspire to a secondhand one. As I understand it Nikon have stated that they will not be using a full frame sensor.
The lens quality of both are superb and impossible to state that one is better than the other. I am well pleased with my purchase
At the end of the day go for your gut feeling.

I was told once that a truely great photographer will get amazing shots even if they use a disposable camera but I needed all the help i can get .. i chose the D70 for 2 reasons...1- it felt better in my hands at the shop....2- the flash sync speed was a bonus and the reviews i read about the noise and ISO stated that Nikon got quality images with 200 ISO and did not feel the need to go to the slower speeds of 100/64/etc.

It has been argued in so many threads around the world about the best between these two manufacturing giants and i feel its a 50-50 but watch out all you DSLR freaks because SONY is about to launch a DSLR body to fit CARL ZEISS glass and i have a funny feeling that this camera will be a real beast.. both nikon and canon use sony electronics in their cameras..

Bottom line is - Both are super machines and for the price you cannot argue really feel it out in the shop and give it a few clicks then you will know the way to go, if you still cannot decide then i think someone said the best option is to spin a coin

Heads Nikon - Tails D70......(joking)

I vote for the Digital Rebel, but then again, I'm a little biased

but they use sony ELECTRONICS, Nikon used Sony sensors for sure, I wonder why they never chose the 4 colour sensor that is found in the F828 I used to have one of those and the emerald does make a difference IMHO.

I doubt the non-core electronics affects the actual image quality. I also doubt the fact that Sony made them gives them an advantage over Canon. In fact, considering Canon have more experience at producing larger DSLR sensors, I would say Sony have very little advantage, if indeed any, at all.

Most sensors are four colour: red-green-blue-green. All Sony have done is switched the second green to be a bluey-green mix. All this does is slightly improves the gamut in the blue area, at the expense of more noise in the green channel.

I hear ya bro... the rebel is a sweet camera

I faced the same choice this past spring - pretty obvious which one I chose. No regrets at all. I believe Nikon has a good lens system, but I have only used the kit lens and 70-300 G so far. I have access to a large stable of lenses for my university's newspaper and will re-evaluate my opinion after getting some time with them.

My personal choice would be the D70.

Seriously though, I think I'd recommend a D70 over a 300D. Saying that, the 300D is cheaper, leaving more money for lenses/accessories, so...

I've seen it several times already - go to a store and try them out, side by side. That's what I did when I had to make the same choice. What pushed me to the D70 was the speed - I nearly dropped it when I tried out the continuous shooting. It's "only" something like 3 fps but coming from digital point & shoot it was (and still is) amazing.

I've got a lot more years with Nikon gear than I do Canon....

But, the D70 stands out, IMHO, as a better choice than the 300d because it is not full of features that are crippled through firmware, its faster response, and, it's BLACK and therefore, is just plain BADASSER.
10/29/2004 10:29:58 AM · #25
Remember, if you are choosing between the D70 and the 300D, you do not want to consider only the features of the camera. Think of it not as buying a camera, but choosing a lens system. The lenses you buy for whichever camera you choose are going to outlast the camera you choose now.

Remember, beautiful pictures can be made with either camera.
