We're going to have a New Year's Resolution side challenge for January!

Take the whole month to focus on and practice *one* thing with your photography or image post-processing. This could be something you've never tried before, or haven't tried enough, or you just want to dedicate a month to it, even if you've already gotten pretty good at it.

Some examples:

Thematic - all pink things, only tables, only water reflections, etc.

Genre-based - portraiture, landscape photography, street photography, astrophotography, etc.

Technique-based - long exposure, flash photography, macros, etc.

Equipment-based - single lens-specific, particular camera, etc.

Post-processing - practice image inversion techniques, blending modes, image composites, etc.

Project-based - throw us 1 or more photo essays during the month, or do a month of story triptychs, etc.

The only Rule: for this challenge please state your month's "resolution" in the description field of every image you post, so people who look at your images can be reminded as to what your focus is for the month. No elaborate statement is needed, just something short and explanatory, e.g., "practicing portraiture", etc.

There are no restrictions as to how you create your images - e.g., you may decide to only take pictures of tables the whole month, but you are completely unrestricted as to *how* you achieve each image. Also, there is no restriction regarding how many people can have the same resolution - don't feel like you have to come up with something unique that no one else has mentioned yet in the sign-up thread.

As before, we don't care what lens you use (or go lensless), what camera, what photographic or editing techniques, what subject matter you choose. Share an image every day, or a few times a week, or a bunch in one go - all completely your choice. We welcome any level of participation and it’s up to you how much you practice your resolution during the month.

If you are interested in joining in, please comment here to confirm your participation AND state what your resolution will be for the month. I'll add your name to this initial post so we have a running list of participants. On January 1, I will create a side challenge thread specifically for posting your creations, and will message everyone listed as a participant that we've started (and link to it in this thread, too). Latecomers are also welcome to join in at any point during January.

Would you join us?

I'm in.
Thematic -- "the unexpected" - and, a related resolution, to surpass my previous sc posting frequency ;-)
Thanks for organizing!

Sounds like fun. I'll have to give my resolution some thought though. Maybe I'll be inspired by something that appears in this thread.

I'll be in too, though I don't know what my theme will be yet.

Welcome everyone!

My New Years resolution will be 4096×2160.

On a more serious note I'll try however may be incapacitated as I'm waiting for a date in January to have my hand butchered operated on. My 'theme' may well depend on mobility.

I'll play! Definitely want to do project based. A theme will be revealed as soon as I know it.
12/15/2018 01:15:36 PM · #9
Sign me up, please! I'll have to think about it though.

Excellent! Welcome aboard. We have over 2 weeks to decide our individual theme...who knows, mine may change. :-D

I hope to be in, AND to settle on something that would be challenging but pleasantly challenging, something I would look forward to without groaning or gritting my teeth, but with great expectations that the product would illuminate the world.

I'll give it another try. How about winter outdoors. It's dreadful outside this time of year . . . but maybe a resolution like this would force me to discover what I'm sure is the wonder of winter!
12/16/2018 01:07:27 AM · #16
I would like to play. I will give some thought to a challenge (though "using the real camera" comes to mind!). If anyone wants to give me a project to consider.... :-)
12/16/2018 11:50:06 AM · #17
I'll do the post-processing option, concentrating on layer blending.
12/16/2018 02:15:45 PM · #18
Modified Image

make at least one change to a photo, so it is something more or less than a recording of reality.
12/16/2018 02:49:50 PM · #19
I’m in and I will start the year totally blind.
12/16/2018 03:59:14 PM · #20
I think I'll give it a try, in the spirit of going through my archives of photos (deleting many, and finding hidden gems to publish).

My resolution: Finding gems in the sea of unprocessed images.

Thanks Roz, it's a team effort with Karen krnodil. We have until January 1st to make up our minds, but I went ahead and put you down for composites. Feel free to change your mind though, I already have. : D
