From DMs I've received from the current side challenge participants and other comments made in the forums, the Square Crop side challenge seems to have been generally well-received so far. So...starting this thread so I can get a sense of how many people may be interested in continuing to have a month-long side challenge with a new theme each month. We could also do alternate months instead, which would give us a break for a month before starting a new one, that sort of thing. Do we have the numbers (and the stamina) for this? What say you?

I'll give this thread a week to allow people to pop in and voice their thoughts - if there is a consensus that we should try to continue with a monthly side challenge (new one starting Dec 1) or every-other-month (new one starting Jan 1), then I will run an informal poll/vote for new challenge themes and see what you all think about that. For now, please hold off with any suggestions for future challenge themes until we get a general sense if we will have any future challenges in the first place, as that will make collecting theme suggestions a tidier process for me, once we get to that part. :)

So, the question on the table for today: would you like to have regular, themed monthly side challenges, and if so, would you prefer every month or every other month?

Either way count me in but it's possible that December is just too hectic.

I have the same concern about December

I know my participation in this one has been very limited so far, but time has been an issue. I really am interested. Maybe a different theme would push me to participate more.

I enjoy side challenges thanks for organising them.

I have enjoyed this side challenge. Square is a broad enough topic that everybody can apply it to their photography. With the holidays approaching participation will probably slowdown. For me, monthly is to frequent.

I am in favor also of the SC, perhaps not monthly and certainly not in December.

I enjoy side challenges. I especially like the way they just occur on their own, no rules, no schedule. December is already booked, for me.

There is something about the square that gathers in the focus.

Let's wait for another brainwave to stir the juices.

I really used to enjoy the side challenges and the current one has made me think about things and techniques I haven't thought about in years. I'm up for more of them if they are loose and not too hung-up on rules. (In other words, a glorified free study with a suggested theme.) With Thanksgiving next week and Christmas looming, I will probably be mostly inactive for the time being, but would be in for more side challenges after the first of the year.

For me, pretty much "Yeah, that..." for the last half dozen posts.

I like it the cone & go thing, the do a little or do a lot thing, pretty much no rules, just a theme.

I'm all for more. If we keep the themes simplish and the rules loose, it's so nice having an active spot to share some photos with others doing the same, but on a much more cozy scale than places like instagram.

I have not participated in the Square side challenge, but I have enjoyed it. Similar side challenges would be great -- I have been unusually busy, but I hope to participate in the future.

thanks for chiming in, Mark - it is very helpful to have feedback from people not participating in the current side challenge, as well

bump for any more feedback...

I agree with the general consensus so far that we should skip December and perhaps start afresh in January
11/27/2018 03:54:22 AM · #18
Start January, no rules (just theme guidelines), vary themes, anyone can jump in when they are inclined, comments highly encouraged, have them monthly or let them go on and on but something about 30 days is a realistic goal for me to try to (but often fail to) achieve. :)

Tell me about it... busy is my middle name :)

I’ve enjoyed looking at some of the photos though. ... but I probably won’t submit, .. challenges are enough for me.

I've really enjoyed the current "square crop" side challenge. As I mentioned in connection with one of my offerings in that challenge which I processed with Nik Analog Efex Pro 2

... There has been something liberating about this side challenge that has led me to experiment with alternative ways of processing my entries and in the course of doing that I've discovered several new [Nik] settings :-)

I think there were tons of photos that people "wouldn't have dared" enter into a scoring challenge, and viewers seemed better able to appreciate those by not having to apply a numerical score.

I did not participate either other than to view, enjoy, and occasionally comment here and there. It has made me visit DPChallenge far more frequently in the past month than I have in months prior. I might actively participate in a side challenge in the future. I need a reason to break out the real camera (although the phone works just fine most times.)

Thank you to all who did participate - I've very much enjoyed seeing your work!

I love side challenges. As for December: good memories of this one
