We have opened a poll to see how often the community would like to see Minimal Editing challenges scheduled. It shows up at the top left of your home page. Let us know what you think!

I voted as well.

I understand Barry glad2badad is giving beer to all of us who vote for once a week.

I'm there, Barry!

You may change your vote as long as the poll is up, assuming you have changed your thinking :-)

Where's the circle to vote never? ;-)

Wasn't there some talk once of allowing cropping for at least some minimal challenges? I'd like to see that.

But why is just Minimal being questioned. Why not ask about the Expert ruleset, and Archival challenges as well?

Because too many polls at once isn't good. Plus, there doesn't seem to be much controversy, in SC or in the membership, with the way those are scheduled now. But we keep hearing requests for more minimal challenges, so...

ETA: I confess to a certain amusement that you JUST brought this topic up in another thread and our response was pretty much instantaneous (we started a poll and this thread), yet practically the first thing you have to say in response is "Why isn't there MORE?" :-)

Ai-yi-yi. That wasn't my thread and all I did was correct the stats that someone else posted.

Ummm, actually, it was 18 'Standard', 2 'Expert', and 0 'Minimal' - just keeping the numbers straight. :-)

My position is, and pretty much always has been, to seek a balance between Minimal and Expert challenges. They both have their place (actually can't believe I'm saying THAT) but neither needs to be prominent, just fairly equal in frequency. There's already a monthly Expert Free Study challenge built in ... how about adding a monthly Minimal Free Study challenge?

What the heck is wrong with you???

Every challenge accepts Minimal entries. Every single one. No other rule set has that privilege.

That's truly a specious point. Sure, you *can* submit a Minimal rules entry into any challenge, but that doesn't make it a Minimal challenge. It's not unreasonable to have an equitable number of all the challenge types. Just the same as you can enter a Minimal entry in any challenge, you can also sit out a Minimal challenge if the ruleset isn't to your liking.

I would love the option to crop too.

Looks like monthly is winning!

The "Liked" statement seems elegantly simple but is simply not true. Demonstrably NOT "every single one." As recently as September we had the Diptych - same scene, different focal lengths challenge with special rules specifically demanding a combination of two images. Minimal Editing demands a "single capture," and that would not be allowed with the Diptych challenge rule. I understand the sentiment, but accuracy does have value.

Besides, Minimal Editing imposes a set of constraints demanding more than minimal skill. Although we have the opportunity to submit Minimal Editing images in most challenges, the tighter rules in a specifically Minimal challenge afford a more equitable competition environment for such images. I see that as healthy at least once in a while. I also find it useful to have regular opportunities to compare images that all meet the same tight restrictions of Minimal Editing, even though such images can also be found scattered (and unidentified) within challenges that have broader editing rules. .

Wait...what?

I thought the whole point of Minimal editing was exactly that--minimal skill.

MAXIMUM skill, Minimal editing.

What he said...

I'd be willing to bet that more long term DPCers would tell you that they are most intimidated trying to create a great image within this ruleset than any other.

Although there are a few stone naturals whom I would say are straight-from-the-camera folks.

You are so right, and Minium is crazy trying to get a good photo, especially in RAW, gonna try in JPEG next time, but it does seriously make you look really hard at what you are shooting.

For me, I would substitute the word frustrated for intimidated. It is hard for me to look at the image straight out of camera and not think it would be so easy to make this image better with a couple of simple adjustments. Perhaps just a tweak of the white balance and/or exposure. Rather than shoot, attempt to analyze the tiny image on back of the camera, adjust settings, reshoot and reanalyze a couple iterations to get it "perfect", I'd rather get a good shot in RAW and adjust to "perfect" later. But, maybe that's just me.
