The following article popped up in my newsfeed this morning. It appears that MS is going to force everyone that hasn't embraced OneDrive to do so.

Back Up Your Data Now

And for those that would suggest an Apple product, thanks-but-no ;-)

Well, if that affects even a minute portion of users, that is going to generate one heck of a shit storm. If true, it's inexcusable. I checked and all of my "My <insert noun here>" folders point to another drive.

Yikes! Thanks for posting this.

I'm way behind on backup. Better do something about it ASAP. Thanks for the warning.

seriously. on one hand, i couldn't believe; on the other, i'm not surprised. i'm an MS captive so all i can do is protect myself.

99% of my stuff is on both xHDs and the cloud, but most of my local stuff is not in OneDrive. i like OneDrive for a lot of things, but no everything - especially stuff that takes of a lot of space on top of not being needed on any other machines or devices. sigh...

maybe for the moment, but it's only a matter of time before you have to move to Win10.

I've been reading about this today! I moved everything to a slave drive a long time ago, & back up to an external drive. I think I'll be OK. What a crazy thing!

If you haven't already, turn off automatic updates and wait until MS sorts it out.

I can't see a way to shut off updates. It did let me pause updates until Nov. 10.

Microsoft:
We have paused the rollout of the Windows 10 October 2018 Update (version 1809) for all users as we investigate isolated reports of users missing some files after updating.

I updated yesterday - things appear OK however, I'll only know if I have missing files when I can't find them!

So far everything appears to be okay but I wouldn't know if a few isolated files went missing. Right now I'm copying all my newer photos to an external hard drive before I connect my computer to the internet again. Hopefully this will teach me to back up my files more regularly in future.

I'm glad to see that the update has been paused. I hope there weren't many people affected.

I couldn't find a way either, but I was considering setting the "active time" (where Windows won't automatically restart) to 12:00am until 11:59pm ...

Anybody know whether the "external drive" can be a USB thumb drive (I have very few files in the described locations)?

AFAIK, you can't really shut off updates. That's by design.
The "My XXXX" folders can be pointed to any local drive just by changing the location.

That f*cking 1803 update trashed my network here at our shop with their "update". It wouldn't allow the win10 Home & win10 Pro boxes to communicate any more. Took me almost a bloody week to get a workaround and it sure as sh*t didn't come from MicroSloth.

NOT looking forward to this.....

I stupidly assumed windows 10 had a way to control updates like 8.1. I guess it doesn't. I opted not to get windows 10. I'm not sorry I didn't. This problem is effecting windows 10 only.

That's a common misconception. What the Ark actually had is a Covenant. (Runs for shelter)

There is a setting you can change in Windows 10 so that you at least get asked if you want to download an update, instead of it being automatic, and there is a separate setting so that you are asked before they are installed. I had to download a program called gpedit.msc "Enable Group Policy Editor" to be able to make these changes. It is not otherwise included in Windows 10 Home Edition. It took a few steps to find it and run it after that but this may be a lead for anyone who is interested.

My immediate issue is that the latest updates were downloaded before I saw this thread and installed gpedit, but at least I can keep postponing the installation for now!
