| I have an older HP desktop computer running Vista. My sister needs a computer and I would like to give her this one. She is not very computer savvy and generally only uses it for email, banking and viewing her pictures from a camera card and tends to call me every time she has a problem. I just did all the updates that were available, but was wondering if I should upgrade to Windows 10. I just finished reading about what it takes to do this and it is a little overwhelming. Any advice or suggestions would be helpful. |

| Vista is gone a long back, MS doesn't support it either and not all other applications too. I would say upgrade but I believe there is Windows 10 home edition do that, it has smaller footprint then pro version. |

| For security reasons I would not recommend running Vista on a machine that will be used for internet access. Vista no longer gets security updates. Upgrading it to Win 10 home is certainly a possibility, however given the age of the hardware there could be some issues with Win 10 compatibility. Not a high likelihood, but possible. |

If the machine came with Vista, then it's a pretty old machine and it may not run Windows 10 very well. Windows 10 may even say as part of it's comparability check that it can't be installed on it. If you don't have at least 4 gigs of ram and an I3 processor it probably won't run Win 10. You should be able to put Win 7 on it if it runs Vista. At least Win 7 is still support update and security wise for another year or maybe two and it doesn't have all the quirks that Win 10 does (like updates that completely change everything including important settings that you want). I wouldn't recommend Windows 8.1 though.
If she was a little bit computer savvy and only wanted to do email and web browsing I'd say install Ubuntu Linux, which is stable and works almost as well as Windows for things like that... and for virus avoidance, even better than a Mac.

| I recommend Windows 10 Home version which I had installed when my hard drive crashed last Dec. You may want to increase the RAM as MikeJ suggested. |

Besides being free, you should be able to download a version from which you can make a bootable disc, so you can test it (or use it) without installing it first. You can also install Windows for things like local image processing, then run Linux when going online.
Personally, I encourage using hardware as long as it works -- I just head a report yesterday that a computer more than five years old is considered "vintage" ... :-( |

| Thanks everyone. It doesn't look like the machine can handle Windows 10. Vista is running smoothly for now and will probably be o.k for what she does. I always liked Windows 7 the best and can look into getting a copy of that if needed. She also has an ipad that she uses most of the time, however, she has always depended on the wifi from her desktop machine that is now not working (older than this one). She is currently fighting stage 4 liver cancer (has been for over a year) and I am just trying to make her life a little easier. We will try this and see how it goes. I really am not impressed with Windows 10; I am just getting the kinks worked out after using it for 10 months! Thanks again. |

Someone who is mot computer savvy, or internet savvy, would likely be very happy with a nice smartphone & the apps to do email & banking.
