Asking for a friend, because all the ones they own are square (except when they open up to be two squares attached by a spine). We must have missed the format change.

only old people know what shape an album cover is.

the blue ribbon doesn't even spell DPL, so....

Well, AFAIK when the term "album" was originally applied to audio materials, it was because 78 rpm records could only hold a few minutes of music, so longer pieces (e.g. Beethoven symphony or a collection) would come on several discs, in sleeves bound in a book much like a photo album; because of the spine/binding these were not square. "Album" as a collection of pieces on a single disc is a holdover from that ...

I don't thinks so ... at least the title acknowledged the "error" ... :-)

Also, previous "album cover" challenges were to use the site's initials -- I had to go back a few times to see this one was different ... I bet a lot of people didn't even notice.

Absolutely.

And dammit, I didn't notice it was DPL and not DPC too. Glad I never got around to entering.

Yes, the term has to do with a collection of works rather than a single record and the term held over once collections of songs were combined on a single, long playing record.

That said, the term "album cover" and its associated shape is what is at question here. And those old enough to know what one is and remember the ritual that was exploring a new one for the first time, they should also know that 2017 was the first year in which vinyl outsold digital downloads since the CD sent them into the attic. And when googling an image search of "album cover" you don't get an awful lot of differently dimensioned photos.

So, as I stare at one wall full of them and another wall with a bookcase full of them, color this person disappointed. Because if the voters are the ones that are supposed to adjudicate what does and does not qualify as DNMC... to paraphrase Ygritte the Wildling, "They know nothing, Jon Snow."

I really appreciate you bringing this up, Don. Of course, I should have kept my trap shut and not pointed out my error in the Comments. At least I got the album shape right. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Doh! I hadn't noticed that either and instead of throwing the book at you, I gave you the highest score in the challenge!

I actually bought this album on Amazon. Comes with a booklet of lyrics and artist bio.

:P :D

Lol, I love you Art.
Yes Jake, I must confess that like Markwiley I didn’t notice the error of my ways until it was too late. My bad. I was so busy worrying about the font and where to place the words I forgot to crop it square. The next time we have an album challenge - in the immortal words of The Who, “we won’t be fooled again” ;-)
