First, let me preface this by saying that I searched under "giving" and got wayyyyy too many results to pick through them, one by one, to see if this topic has already been discussed. So with that....
I dink around another site whose premiss is "to provide free image reference material for use in all creative pursuits." In other words, you post your photos and anyone, anywhere, can download them for free and use them in their advertising, books, websites...ANYWHERE...without paying a copyright, useage, or royalty fee.
In all fairness, this site is also putting together a book where the proceeds are going to underpriveleged children and we who participated did so for charity.
However, I see so many of these photographers, who do very, very nice work, having their photos used ALL OVER THE PLACE and they're not seeing a cent out of it.
Isn't this devaluing the work of those photographers trying to make a living at this art?

it's up to the creator of the work to decide how they would allow it to be used. if they want to give it away - they can.
every image posted here is legally not supposed to be used for any use -w/o the authors permission. if it is that is a copyright violation

I personally do not have a problem with this issue (with regards to my own photos) from either a moral or commercial point of view. If my "work" was of a commercial standard and likely to generate an income, I would most certainly not post it to a public site which allows for "right click copy" and discourages embedded watermarks. Professional photographers shoud have their own gallery sites with as much protection as they feel necessary built in.
I would say however, that the practice of copying without permission and butchering in PS to pupport as original (as was suffered by a few of the members here a few weeks ago) is rather deplorable.
I doubt weither the small resolutions allowed in these galleries would allow for any "rip offs" to be of much commercial use anyway.

I started out by putting some of my images on //www.sxc.hu but have not updated anything there in months. I have gotten lots of emails telling me they have used my images for this or that and they send me copies of what they have done with my images, and all in all I think its cool. I first started doing this on Stock Xchange for comments, I wanted to see what others thought of my images and which ones would rate highest, be the most downloaded or most commented. It was a learning experience. I could take them off the site, but I choose to leave them. I dont currently sale any images, I might in the future if I get a better camera. I would also have no problem contributing to a book that was going to charity, it would honor me and most likely others would feel the same way.

| i agree was just at the photo plus expo in NYC and they had a booth there about the photo business and such, some good stuff, come on people if you guyz have a good picture theres no reason not to protect it, im only a high school photographer but people try and steal my stuff cause its quality, so its all the same 'cause people will steal your work and you could be getting paid, just saying ur missing out on some $$ and we could all use some $$$ |
