Not sure if I should get a cheap one or something that has more features...

Thoughts?
Links to the one you have?

depending on your camera model, there might be an app.

depending on what you want to do, you might not want to go cheap. google up pluto. that puppy has a lot of goodies. that's what i have, but i'm feeling to lazy to look for the link ;-)

I've read these kill the batteries of the camera because it's always "searching" for the cable release. And I just want it for long exposure shots for landscapes and things when using an ND filter.

Certainly there would be additional drain on the battery using WiFi... I can't imagine that it would be of great concern except for long sessions at low temperatures, e.g. night sky imaging at high altitude. Big advantage is *no* physical contact with the camera, thus no transmitted vibration.

I picked up the "pulse" from Alpine Labs on a kickstarter about a year ago. I haven't used it much, but it's pretty robust. Connects to the USB port, and essentially uses the teathered shooting controls. Not cheap, but not expensive, and it has the benefits of being able to keep your hands off the camera and change settings.

They have some competition, but I haven't used any.

waking up this old thread!

Does anyone have either MIOPS or Pluto trigger? I am wondering on which one to go with? I see the Pluto trigger is one trigger and others are accessories like drop kit valve where as with MIOPS, trigger itself is expensive and value is in same boat.

Question: are you looking specifically for the flexible triggering features for high-speed event capture? Of just for a reliable wireless trigger? Which of the MIOPS products are you looking at?

I don't have direct experience with either the MIOPS or Pluto products, but would be glad to look a little harder at both, since it is an area that interest me as well.

Thank you :)

I am looking to buy one remote trigger that has audio, lightning, laser to trigger camera and I see they both support it but the price difference is huge. almost double the price. Miops is expensive compare to Pluto.

Ok -- I'm curious about this, as well, since my Sony doesn't seem to have a standard remote cable plug.

I have the phone app that comes with Sony, which is cool, because I can actually see what the camera's seeing and activate it. this is perfect for selfies, etc. However, I'd like to use it for wildlife -- press and have it immediately take the photo. Press and hold and have it do my 10 fps. The app has a slight delay, and no rapid advance.

Never heard of MIOPS or Pluto.

Girish,
I will take a closer look at both, and post back my thinking.

Thank you Fritz!

One more thing, so far what all I read about the two, Pluto is replica of Miops. Pluto has non-standard battery where as Miops has a battery that can be bought over from near by stores.

So, from a features standpoint, judging purely from the published specs, they look very close. There are two clear differentiators, however, both in favor of the MIOPS:
1.) Battery life on the Pluto is stated as 20 hours, however it *will* be much lower at low temperatures. I would not use it for an extended session shooting star trails at low temperatures. The MIOPS is rated 3-4 days. Both use rechargeable batteries.
2.) The MIOPS is usable without a smart phone, the Pluto is not.

After doing some reading of reviews, it seems like the MIOPS triggering functions are better-performing than the Pluto.

If I were buying one of these, I would buy the MIOPS over the Pluto in a heartbeat. It is more money, about 70% more, but seems better engineered.

I'm interested in what you find out.

Thank you so much!!!! this does help for sure :)

I was leaning towards Miops too but the money factor was coming in and also any other gadgets if I need to buy like water drop kit then that is also 3 times the cost of pluto. Pluto can be linked to existing trigger where as the Miops the water drop kit is all in one and that is why it adds money to that.

I will need to look for someone who can sponsor me - LOL

again thank you so much and yes what you shared below does help!

Oh did someone mention a new toy?!! :)

I have had a read and watched a few videos and these triggers look fun.

I see MIOPS have the following 2 gadgets:

MIOPS camera trigger and MIOPS Mobile Remote

It is not clear to me if the more expensive trigger can do everything the mobile remote can do assuming I use it in conjunction with their smart phone app. I certainly wouldn't want to buy both.

The Pluto looks pretty damn good too though I have noted the points kirbic has made and if the MIOPS trigger can do everything the Pluto can do I would pay the extra and go with the MIOPS

I have Miops. Can’t say that I have used it much. I bought it specifically to use the water drop kit which I did not have much success with. I did everything according to directions. I even contacted technical service but I could not get the drops timed correctly nor could I get the drops to line up properly for collisions. Also, you can only use water in the dropper per the directions. I did play around a little with the sound and light triggers which did work but I did not actually take any pictures. The laser trigger I found also to be tricky to use. I’m not saying with time I could not have mastered it, I don’t know, but it was not as easy as advertised.

Thanks Lawrence - now you mention it I do recall you having issues with a trigger for water drops but didn't recall the make of trigger you were using.

I like the idea of trying to set up a laser trigger for wildlife shots - but I have read it doesn't work so well with the laser outdoors and also I don't want to blind myself or anyone or anything else.

If it worked it could be a handy device for some fun on a winter evening though more likely to gather dust with a few of my other photography purchases.

Thank you Lawrence, that is exactly what confused me, people talk like piece of cake and some says it is hard either with Miops or Pluto. so what I want to catch is 3 things primarily:

1. Lightning --> I can do this by have long exposure for say 30 seconds and in there I would say I will get atleast one shot of 10s of shots :D
2. Sound --> this I dont have anything right now
3. Laser --> this I dont have anything right now

all others I can do pretty well outside of this trigger.
