65 - the total number of entries in the challenges open for voting. Is this the lowest ever?

11/22/2017 10:30:34 AM · #2
I don't know about the total, but here is the all time list of challenges, ordered by entries, ascending. The first one is a challenge from 2002 with 9 entries, and the following 6 all have less than 20 entries. To be fair, that one is the first ever challenge.

Open challenge usually have higher number of entries, due to higher number of potential photograpters, but Marx Brothers is kinda stupid one, hence the low turnout.

My thoughts, throw out challenge suggestions dated before (let’s say) 2013 and continue from there. We’ve had some pretty silly challenges lately. As for myself I like the challenges that push me to learn new techniques.

My thoughts, if higher participation is desired, don't put up challenges that require research to shoot, enter, or even vote on competently. Who wants to have to do homework?

but, but, isn't dpc itself a sort of homework?

as for me, I cannot keep up with challenges, especially when 2 are due at the same time.

One of my all-time favorite comments ...

I really hope you're not talking about the Marx Brothers....

As a result of Marx Bros challenge I ended up watching clips from You Bet Your Life on YouTube most of last evening. Very funny stuff. These days Groucho would be referred to as a lecherous old man. Back in the 50s & 60s it was game on.

At this stage in the life of DPC wouldn't fewer challenges make sense? Also, we had, on average 31 votes, in the extended FS that ended yesterday.
We are also having a severe case of voter burnout, too. Is this idea nuts? What if we found a photography class that would be willing to vote and comment
on one challenge a week? We could figure out someway to compensate them. It would give all of us a brake from voting, and a chance to have new opinions
and viewpoints that might inspire all of us. Maybe we could arrange it for 6 months? I know, it sounds crazed but think about it. It really could be done.

I agree with Cyrilda. I enjoy the challenges which force one to use a technique that they may not have tried before. I learn more from the exercise than from the comments. The score only tells you whether others "like" the composition and if it satisfies the challenge. The outstanding aspect of DPC is that it has inspired me to take shots that I never would have thought to take or creatively composed. So for me it is not the comments or even the number of votes it has become the inspiration that is the motivating factor. One needn't feel pressure to enter every challenge. Pick the ones that appeal to you. If you are not so inclined to reach for the more selective challenges than just enter the Free Study.

Why not? I'd have no idea what to shoot for this challenge (and I didn't). Homework would be required to know the subject. Why do so many assume that the 'Marx Brothers' are widely known?

Here's the skinny, for those addicted to data:

This is a plot of the number of images in voting each week since January, 2002 and the average votes per image, again weekly and over the same timeframe.

ETA: One interesting thing to note, you can see the beginning of monthly free studies starting in January 2007. Those are the monthly spikes.

ETA: Updated image to include legend and axis labels; may have to CTRL+Refresh to see changes.

I was indeed talking about the Marx Brothers. And in the style of ...... And particular musical bodies of work. Challenge themes ought to be accessible to people of different cultures - without spending hours in research. Some of us have other things to do.

Because they are widely known.

With all due respect Don, I disagree. Maybe 50, 60 years ago?

Even the (former) communist states are familiar with this icon of entertainment if not economics ...

In retrospect, I do recognize the glasses / nose / mustache getup as a common costume item, but hadn't associated it with the Marx Brothers. Laurel & Hardy / Charlie Chaplin - familiar with them (a little). Buster Keaton ... nope.
