Is this Flipped, like a basic mirror flip, or this a Flip N Blend?

"Take a photo that makes creative use of being flipped backwards or upside down."

Since it doesn't specify, I'm guessing that you can decide when you flip it, so long as it's creative?

IMO just flipped -- it says nothing about blending. I think you can flip it either horizontally or vertically; technically rotating 180° is not the same.

Imagine if there was lettering (if there isn't) -- it should appear as reflected mirror-writing ...

I'm pretty sure that flip and blend isn't legal in standard editing and there's no flag.

Not flip and blend. Just flip.

It's Standard editing rules, as the OP is surely aware.

.

These aren't flipped, they're rotated 90 degrees Would they qualify?

My editing software (PSP X9) has two very similar edit options under the 'Image' menu: Mirror (Horizontal / Vertical) and Flip (Horizontal / Vertical).

Both provide the same end result (i.e. Mirror Horizontal is the same as Flip Horizontal).

So, really, not a big deal. Pretty much a Free Study type challenge then without a theme. Got it.

Rotating does not create a mirrored image. Your images would "qualify" in the sense that they would not be subject to DQ, but I expect would probably be voted low by the picky voters.

The challenge description doesn'y say anything about 'mirror,' but...

...flip and mirror. I would think that would be a DQ because of creating new image information. And it's only possible in post-processing.

Flip & mirror horizontal, then flip & mirror the results vertical.

But

Flip Horizontal just switches the right- & left-side information. No way to know by looking at it that it's been flipped. Usually, images that read well from left to right do not read as well when flipped horizontal. It can be done in-camera.

Flip Vertical just turns it upside down. This has more interesting possibilities. This can be done in-camera, also.

You can flip it horizontally. You can flip it vertically. Either of those constitutes a "mirror image" of the original.

You you take a picture which looks essentially the same after performing one of these steps, then you run afoul of the description urging you to take a picture for which flipping the picture somehow adds to the impression you want the viewer to have. Including anything which has a degree of asymmetry (e.g. letters) would give the viewer a hint that the picture had been flipped.

Flip/blend is not allowed for this, or I'd be doing it.

It's really not that complicated.

You're right. Sorry for opening the can of worms. I'd remembered some prior "Flip & Blend" challenges and at first thought this was another of those.

pixelpig is correct that it couldn't happen with the given ruleset for the challenge ... missed that.

One thing, if nothing else, that comes out of this conversation for me is the seemingly redundant menu choices I have in my editing tool with Mirror / Flip - both being pretty much the same thing. :-)
