Solar Eclipse 2017 -- the photographic opportunity of a lifetime!
07/23/2017 11:46:19 AM · #2
That is SUCH a restricted audience ... I think this would be better suited as a side challenge, not one for a regular weekly consideration.

It is said its better to be lucky than good. A solar eclipse is such an event, I'm sure many people are travelling to see it. The lucky heroes who do get to observe/photograph any part of the eclipse should be honored with a challenge. Why be stingy? Right? Plus, it would be fun to vote it.

Barely getting 50 entries a week for regular subject material. Why take away a weekly challenge item for many to do such a limited item.

And no, I think the images will all be quite similar and not fun to vote on.

... They could use eclipse photos as one of their free study entries.

I doubt there'll be more than a handful of people who can enter it as it's very definitely a US only event.

People from around the world are coming to America to photograph the coast-to-coast event on August 21, 2017. Hospitality reservations have been sold out for more than a year in the eclipse path. I'm worried about traffic on I-25North from Denver that day because of the masses traveling into the zone of totality. It's clearly a big deal. With a moderate amount of good photography applied, there could be a variety of interesting interpretations with Super telephotos and telescopes with cameras rigged. The sun's corona, the ring of light at the edge of the sun/moon and detail in the shadow of the moon. Most importantly, this will be the last total eclipse in my lifetime, although I'll try to make to the next total eclipse in America on Apr. 8, 2024. The last time the contiguous U.S. saw a total eclipse was in 1979.

Yes, we can enter in free studies. However, IMHO, this is a rare astronomical event that will be observed by tens of millions. It is definitely worthy of its own challenge topic.

Monday, August 21, 2017 total solar eclipse

Just put it in as a speed challenge. No reason for any controversy. It's the perfect speed challenge opportunity.

True. Good idea, and won't derail the normal challenge schedule.

Rick (husband) recently saw that a state park that is in the totality center was auctioning their sites for $2K PER NIGHT!!! And another house that's in the totality pat is renting their house for $15k per night minimum of 4/5 night!!!

It's definitely big!!!

Remember that most of the US will see the eclipse, just not the total phase. I won't be able to travel into the path of totality, but I plan to photograph the eclipse, as I have previous solar eclipses visible from my area ...
Solar Eclipse, May 2012
Solar Eclipse, October 2014
Transit of Venus, June 2012

So, I agree it could work as a (48-hr) speed challenge ...

A speed challenge would do the trick.

Great source of solar eclipse photography info.

Here's a link interactive map by zip code that may be useful for those planning on watching it.

I'm in a 99% totality area, but in all honesty, I'll probably be sleeping through it...

I just hope that its nice dry weather and not too windy, so that everyone can stay dry and safe.

Shifting my target destination for eclipse viewing to near Shoshoni, WY. //www.windrivereclipse.org During totality, I will remove solar filters. And, the plan is to stop down to f/8 or f/11 with 560mm of lens focal length. Also, purchased a roll of gaffer's tape to lock down a (pre-tested) focused lens at the right infinity setting. I will be shooting at ISO 100. Don't know shutter speed, yet. Somewhere between 1/125s and 1/1000s. I'll bracket a lot. With Live View enabled, I'm pretty sure my mirror will be locked up... avoiding shutter/mirror vibrations. Tripod mount, of course. Statistically, an 8% chance of clouds at Shoshoni, WY. Next step is to practice, practice, practice. This will likely be the last total solar eclipse of my lifetime.

West Texas in 2024 is a good possibility... I'm personally waiting on the one that passes directly over my house... in 2099. I've asked them to plant me face up :-)

make it expert editing so that those not able to view it can create their own fauxclipse

- What fauxcal length do I use?

- I thought fauxclipse was what the barber does these days when she "cuts" my hair.

-- just make sure you crop clipse it tight.

-- it's all good as long as your corona gleams.

This would be a good challenge for a special challenge, even a speed challenge. Just to see which of our eclipse-heads can nail it... Obviously, it can only be shot for on the day-of, but how much time will we want to leave for processing? I assume some folks will be traveling to capture this.

We'll be travelling. It would be nice to have 3 days.
