Create a poster like in old times to announce the groundbreaking technology of pocket calculators.

Ps. I am a collector of old Calculators and have about 3000 in my collection. Also the most complete Casio collection in the world.

But do you have a Friden EC130?

Everyone knows the only good calculator is an RPN calculator.

Nope...I had to narrow down my collectivity to pocket calculators and ALL Casio's. Those huge machines are taking too much space.

An interesting article in the EETimes about a guy who made a "modern" version using an FPGA.

ETA: Evidently the link to the guy's site is a dead end...too bad

Here's a link that goes into the Friden EC130 and what makes it so cool

FWIW, I actually do have a Friden EC130...

Nice...

I have a collection of slide rules, nothing too special or exotic though.

As far as calculators go, I have an HP48GX. That's what I used to get through engineering school. It was amazing. I could write apps to solve most problems and build tools to help where a direct solution wasn't possible. Now, the calculators are even more powerful. I just bought a TI Inspire for my son...it almost feels like cheating to use it. He was playing DOOM on it after a while.

I still want a HP15C...because...I just do.

Now though, for problems where I'd need a calculator beyond what's on my phone, I just use my laptop and Excel or Python to get the job done.

I have a sliderule (and a circular sliderule) and (somewhere) a very early calculator (LED display!), brand unknown at this time. I also have one designed for technophobes which doesn't even need batteries!

I still have and still use the 15c that I bought in 1982 for engineering school. I have a second 15c that I bought from a co-worker about 18 years ago, and also a 16c that I bought from another co-worker. Come to think about it, I also have a "15c Limited Edition" still in box & shrink wrapped that I bought some years back.

The 15C really is a calculator icon. Even well used copies sell for $200+. The "Limited Edition", made in 2011 due to customer demand, that you have NIB is $5-600 easily. All for a calculator that came out in 1982.

If nothing else, RPN calculators all but guarantee no one will ask to borrow it... "Hey, where's the equals key?"

My dad had one of those. I never learned how to polish it in reverse, sadly... True story :-)

My ex-father in law bought me an HP16C in 1982 when I was in the Navy. I wrote several programs for it for troubleshooting shipboard radar display equipment. Haven't seen it since the 90's and I'd be lucky if I could figure out how to power it on these days.

Haw, both my wife and my daughter were forced to learn use it, because it was usually the one that was handy, LOL.

Anyway, it's an off-the-wall challenge suggestion for sure. How many people actually think this would make a GOOD challenge? I'm curious...

I'm not sure either, but the first challenge would be to find that Casio you recall having...

Oh, here ya go:

If you DO find it, they sell for $2-400 on eBay depending on condition.

I think a calculator challenge would be a fine thing to see... That or maybe an old school "tech" ad for a calculator OR old school computer...

I can't think of anything more boring to vote on than this.

A life without challenges is boring.

This can be a VERY nice challenge if people take time to think more.

That one is pretty rare and highly valuable. Rarely seen for sale. Estimated value around 100 US$

That reminds me, we're about due for another "Flowers" challenge. Thanks for the memory jog, sporkster :-)

Bwa-ha-ha!

Actually, if this suggestion were generalized a bit to just "old calculator" it would open up a lot of interesting possibilities...
