I don't think we can blame low voter turnout on newbies entirely, or even mostly. There are some ribbon winners up there now who have been here for an age and don't seem to care for voting but do enjoy receiving them it seems. That's nothing new really. It might be simpler to encourage/invite new members to participate in voting than prodding someone who's been here forever.

I'm an oddity. I let my membership expire last June after having paid up every year since 2005. I couldn't even go a whole year! I renewed a couple weeks ago for a couple reasons...I like the inspiration the challenges can be, and I missed being able to vote on all the challenges. I really missed voting! I like being #38 in the top 50 voters for the site and I aim to move up a few places. :-)

Glad you're back.... and I too enjoy voting, but it's part and parcel to my entering... I like to see and judge the competitions (ie: how does my entry compare type of thing. But that's me.
I concede that not everyone gets that thrill and do realize that there are seasoned DPCrs who choose not to vote on some or all... that's their prerogative.

I would go on about my reasons for this post, but would rather others chime in. There are clearly some new members who don't vote. Or don't comment. Or both. Or at least haven't yet. Is there a way to encourage them?
I know when I was a new member I got a PM from an old timer that totally thrilled me....Just the fact that it happened thrilled me. I have been remembering that recently and wondering if something like that would help.
Comments?

I remember getting a pm from a long time member when I first joined and I still remember every word of it. If it is done with the intention
of helping the person participate and being available to answer questions it cannot hurt. It does not seem that many of the new people have
appeared in the forums to introduce themselves or to ask questions. In some cases it could be a language difference?

There has to be a cause and effect...entering a few dozen challenges without a vote or a comment or a peep does not seem very satisfying.

I like this idea, but it works better if we allow hazing and boot camp style "mentoring". [/quote]

Here, here now no Hazing please!!! I promise to do better at commenting.

No worries. Once you win a ribbon you are officially exempt from hazing :-)

Thank you and so glad you're back. Everyone misses the Bear when he's under the weather.

Not everyone... Anyway, I was OVER the weather in a Lear jet at 50,000 feet :-)

Glad you stayed/came back- we need more voters just like you. I feel the same about comments. I like moving up the most comments ladder.

Curiously, there are basically two options with the Medevac, with them controlling which option they use. The first is the flying beer-can-rocketship (aka Learjet 35B) and the other is business class with attendants on commercial flights. I was actually hoping for the second one, but the problem is there are no non-stop flights from Vegas to Boston (go figure) and so it would have necessitated changing planes en-route and then a 2+ hour ambulance ride from Boston to Hyannis hospital. The Lear can fly directly to Hyannis airport, and THAT's just a 5-min transfer to the hospital, so this is what they did.

I wonder what the price tag is on your ride. When they stuck me on the helicopter for what's just a 20 minute drive, the official bill said $37,000.

Gawd only knows... Thank goodness we had insurance for that...

I'ts a Sobering thought, and man I am so priveliged to be a kiwi, if I was unlucky enough to be in Bears position here, the Government would have picked up the total tab. Our Health system may not be perfect.but in 99% .it works, and yes we do get those who moan about the delivery of these services especially health

The 26 people who entered thought my image was worth 5.0
And the other votes averaged to 6.0

So what do we make of this?

I'm not sure you can make anything of it - the sample is much too small and arbitrary. Now if this is an overall pattern over 25 challenges, then you can make some assumptions, but there isn't enough with one smallish sample size. Best regards, Tom

.... but by my calculations you switched the numbers for votes tallied from entrants and from those who did not enter.

There were 26 votes from people who entered (participants), and they gave an average score of 5.1.
There were 17 votes from those who did not enter, averaging 6.1.

Math is a bit of an enigma to me, so I am wondering, how do you break the information down into these figures?

The total number of votes is 43.

43 x 5.4551 = 235 (total number of points voters gave)

If X is the number of votes from entrants and Y is the number of votes from non-entrants, X+Y=43

(X x 5.0769) + (Y x 6.0588) = 235 (total votes given by entrants + total votes given vy non=entrants must be 235 per first line)

The above is all the information you need to create and solve an algebraic equation to find the values of X and Y: but my algebra skills are decades out of date so I'm not gonna go any further. Penny worked this one out, though (both Pennies, actually).

Symbolab (which I just found, gives me this:

Thanks Robert. If I ever want to work out an equation I know where to go. (Easier than trying to actually do it.)

Thanks Art. I'm roflmaho!
