I am submitting three images to a state magazine, edited and as full res jpgs, for their use (at their request). They also want the RAW files. I do NOT want the art editor or anyone else to re-edit and use their edits. I would be willing to submit a small unedited file so they could check for the journalistic integrity of the shots. I usually do my resizing in FastStone. I do have Creative Cloud. I tried to resize the file in FS but then there was no option for saving as a raw - they would just have to take my word for it. Does anyone have any advice for me? Please do not worry about insulting me by being too basic in what you may suggest :)

First I'd want to know why they "need" the RAW files and what they intend to do with them. Do you mean this is a publication of your state government? If so, you may be putting your work into the public domain ... hard to know without reading their agreement.

Yes, it's a publication of the state government. The photos are from a local historical site - people shots of reenactors with their permission. I'm not worried about public domain on these though it's a good question and one I'll ask. Any suggestions on the RAW files, though?

I don't really have any useful suggestions as I've never actually worked with RAW files, but I know part of the whole point behind them is that they can't be edited and then re-saved. If they really require them as a condition of submission I'm not sure there is anything you can do, except maybe include a letter or something requesting that they not be re-edited (they may want them for archival or, as you mention, verification purposes.

One thing you might consider is checking to see if your camera has a way to include your copyright info in the EXIF data (there is an "Owner" field which can be customized on my camera).

"It is not my practice to release my RAW files. The final (JPEG) output represents my artistic work product, and I do not wish to have my RAW files re-edited by another party."

I'm pretty sure they want the RAW files for the same reason we do; to determine ownership. It's SO easy to rip off a picture and call it your own these days...

This makes sense, Bear. I did send the edited files and inquired as to the reason/need for the ARW. I am very willing to be reasonable and to trust what I consider a trustworthy party. But I do thank those who are posting cautions - always learn from these discussions.

a lot late to this party, but...

for all intents and purposes, nobody knows whether or not you shot RAW unless 1) they tell you to or 2) you tell them you did. if they don't know, there's no reason to tell them.

fwiw, i have a love/hate relationship with the Associated Press. i hate their basic rights-grab contract and parsimonious rates. however, i *love* their delivery specs: jpg files 300dpi no larger than 2MB. and that is the default delivery i provide all my clients. since going to this nearly 2 years ago, i've only had one or two requests for a larger file.

so, shoot RAW to your hearts, but deliver them not. (unless, of course, they're requested by the SC...)

I shoot in the RAW if that helps
