My iPhone 6 Plus has a bad case of touch disease and I need to sort myself out a new phone before it completely dies.

Whilst I do tend to have my DSLR with me at most times, there are occasions where I don't have it and have appreciated being able to take photos on my iPhone.

I thought the iPhone 7 Plus would be the obvious choice but reading some forums last night has given me doubts with reports that the noise reduction is so strong that photos lack detail.

Anyone here have any experience with this iPhone and would like to comment?

The Google Pixel seems to be highly praised but not perfect. I have no problem jumping to Android if needs be.

Any advice much appreciated. My sensible head says just buy a cheap second hand iPhone 5S and save my money but my GAS tells me to sign up for a 24 month contract and pay through the roof for a new toy.

Huawei P9 best phone I ever owned by far, the camera is pretty good too, better than iPhone, can't recommend it enough, actually works good as a Phone too unlike the iPhone 6plus I had it was a pile of crap, so glad I switched to android and the Huawei P9 is brilliant.

Thank you - I did not have that phone on my radar. I will do some Googling. To be fair I have been pretty happy with the camera on the iPhone 6 Plus though had noticed it did lack detail often which I assume was due to the extreme noise reduction.

Thanks Kees - that is a very sensible suggestion. Hmm can I be sensible? :)

I switched from iPhones for a while already for various reasons but that does not stop me to recommend them. My wife just got a iP7+ and she is more then happy. I found the portrait mode quite impressive.

Back to your question, how worse then other phones could it be the noise reduction?

If i were you in the Apple iPhone ecosystem Idl just stay there.

That being said I am very happy with my S7. I even have a full array of ribbons :)

Thanks Tiberius - that is good to know your wife is happy with the iPhone 7+

I am not too concerned about remaining with Apple as I don't have a Mac (well not one that I use) and just tend to use my phone in isolation. I did try an HTC Desire phone many moons ago and did not get on with Android OS but I am sure things have improved since then.

I could pay Apple £140 to repair the "touch disease" on my iPhone 6 plus but it feels wrong to pay for a well reported fault with that phone.

Maybe it was a poor effort to be funny, but at the same time I mean it. For me taking pictures with any phone is not an option - I'd rather take no picture than a bad picture. I have a iPhone 5 and I dont like the picture quality, but as I understand, the quality of the 5S is much better and used it is not too expensive.

But I'm sure you'll get great advise from other DPC phone adepts. Good luck in finding a new one.

You make a good point - I recently reflected on how whilst I take a lot of photos with my phone, many of which look great when viewed on the phone they don't tend to look so good when viewed on a big screen. But I do love having a camera on me at all times even if it is not the best camera. For example I had to go to London this week for a meeting and didn't take my camera as I knew I only had a little time either side of my meeting in which to travel from station to meeting. I ended up taking this photo on my phone and literally processed it and posted it on Twitter while walking along the street. I couldn't have done this with my DSLR but it would surely have taken a better shot.

Anyway I definitely need a new phone asap so just wanted to weigh up paying more to get a better camera vs getting something cheaper and making do.

For an example here is a night shot with the iP7Plus from Myrtle Beach.

That is straight out of the phone.

I forgot that I took an evening shot of the same church. This will give you a comparison.

My previous phones would have been so grainy that it would almost been hard to tell it was a church. Not submission worthy but good enough for a memory. Hand held, no dslr available and no tripod.

Yes I can see that photo. Looks pretty good. Is that straight out of the camera (phone) ?

Yes straight from camera. I'll post two more in low light in bit

edit:

here

These 2 are also straight from the camera. Can also save RAW (iPhone can too) but i did not find it extremely useful.

Today i just learnt Snapseed has built-in RAW tools. Just plugged my card into the Galaxy S7 via OTG, selected the JPG, which was in the same folder as the DNG file taken by my drone and shared it to Snapseed. The app automatically detected the DNG and opened it.

Neat...

Thanks Tiberius - That S7 looks like a good bit of kit. It is definitely now in my list of serious considerations

I have an iphone 6 plus and am mildly happy. I use it when I cannot take my Fuji or when it's too dark. But my son has a iphone 7 and the difference is amazing. It has this portrait mode which does a deapth effect. Beautiful.

I'll second the S7 as a good option. The camera is regarded as among the top performers in the Smart Phone category. I've been more impressed with the RAW performance than with the JPEG files, but bottom line, performance is quite good. One weird bit of behavior, though is that in order to enable RAW capture, you have to be in "Pro" mode. But Pro mode isn't a sticky setting so each time the camera app is opened, it has reverted to Auto mode, and just reinvoking Pro mode does not turn RAW capture back on. It's a bit of a hassle, and one that might well be solved by using a 3rd-party app, but frankly I don't use it so much that I've researched 3rd-party camera apps.
