So, we get an abstract expressionism challenge with the instruction to follow the style of another photographer? I love the idea of abstract expressionism, in the style of ... not so much.

Siskind is a bit...uh...depressing...

I actually quite liked what I saw of Siskind's work. I'm just not sure I can do it under minimal editing.

I was more thinking of Kandinsky's style when we're talking about abstract expressionism...
Discovering Siskind's work thanks to DPC yesterday
In the style of Siskind is just given as reference. Agree with jomari

I will definitely be thinking of the painters, not the photographer who hung out with them.

I gotta say, this guys photography does absolutely nothing for me, just looks like a collection of textures for using as overlays.

A few of them had people in them too. :-)

After looking at some of the images by this artist I decided to enter.
The only thing in its favour is its hopefully witty title. haha

I could probably enter now but I want to play with this one a bit more. I'm enjoying looking for shots I normally wouldn't see.

+1 It's a little bit addictive.

I get excited when I see the abstract challenges appear. My tastes and appreciation of them has grown so much since I started here.

But this one has me shaking my head.

I just don't get this...

First, I'm not sure I'm finding good links. When you just google, you get a mixture of his stuff and other things. So perhaps I'm missing the epic ones. But they don't seem to fit abstract or expressionism.

There were one or two that were "oh, hey, that's kind of cool"... "maybe"...

But otherwise, they seem so, well, boring. Nice textures, but otherwise emotionless.

Having never heard the term Abstract Expressionism until this challenge, and looking at these photos, I feel like a blind person to whom someone is trying to explain color. :(

If a blind person bangs their head, do they see stars? I was trying to think of a way to explain color to a blind person ... went off on a tangent.

I feel the same way. Yesterday, I found so much 'easy stuff' that it seems worthwhile to explore even further.

Just so I understand the rules, this:
"create your entry in JPG format from a single capture. (RAW images may not be used in Minimal Editing)."
means to take the photo in JPG, right? No converting the RAW image to JPG in my editor?
Thanks!

You are right. It must be shot in JPG format. Then follow the minimal rules to the letter.

I haven't seen anything of Siskind's that grabs me. As a body of work they have a little bit of ... I don't know, character seems too strong... but something. Individually they all look meh.

To me, expressionism means we express ourselves, so this is a weird combination of directives.

Well, in the "art world", semantically, "expressionism" and "impressionism" more or less stand in opposition to "formalism", if that helps any (which I doubt it will). Two of my teachers, way back when in NYC, Were Robert Motherwell and Philip Guston:

Thanks, I do get that - I already got that, but I still think the artist has to feel the expression. I'll happily do abstract expressionism, but I think I might ignore Siskind.

edited to correct stupid typo

this is a perfectly valid critique of Abstract Expressionism, in my humble opinion. It's not actually my favorite art movement, which makes sense, since it was a reaction against my favorite, Surrealism, and was part of a larger postmodern rebellion against that marvelous, dangerous creature, Modernism.

They were saying no to ideas as well as objects, trying to achieve some sort of pure expression. But there is no purity, or if there is, it's boring.

I do like a Pollock, though, because it moves. Unlike a photo capturing a moment, a Pollock captures hours of effort.

When it's good, an Abstract Expressionist piece is a meditation. It's beautiful the way a sunset is beautiful. I prefer the ideas and irreverence of Modernism, when there was still something civilized to rebel against.

Totally. It's worth mentioning scale and size here. A lot of these paintings are huge and it's a totally different experience meeting them in person than on a computer screen or on a page in a book.

Changed my entry.
Might change it back.
Might not.
Who know??
