8 challenges open for submission: 5 Standard, 3 Extended, 0 Minimal
4 challenges in voting: 3 Standard, 1 Extended, 0 Minimal

Why so many Extended and 0 Minimal?

I think there is a much larger pool of "suitable" topics for Extended than for Minimal. Please feel free to expand that pool ...

I think The General is saying there is a much larger pool of Extended-suitable topic sSUGGESTIONS in the pool at present... than Minimal-suitable topic SUGGESTIONS and... he is encouraging you to suggest more ... minimally-suitable topics.

This is correct. We have very few topics in the queue that were proposed as "minimal" challenges right now. You folks should come up with some creative-juice-stirring topics that are made-to-be-minimal, and you'll see more minimal challenges. We promise :-)

I knew exactly what Paul was suggesting. It's the push-button response from several SC members today (basically if you don't like the way things are, make them better, etc...). That's potentially opening up a bigger can of worms than what's needed here in this specific forum thread (plenty of other existing forums for that topic).

Bottom line: I feel it's a cop out to automatically respond that there's not enough challenge suggestions made that called for the 'Minimal' ruleset. How many times have challenge suggestions been made with a specific ruleset and that "suggested" ruleset was negated and the challenge run under something else? Many times. ... and no, it's not on me to have to prove it, as I'm sure some SC will quickly suggest.

There have to be numerous challenge suggestions that could be implemented under the Minimal rules. Heck, there's probably plenty of challenge suggestions made that don't even have a suggested ruleset mentioned in them.

Sorry guys, not buying it. I still say B.S. If you (SC, Langdon, DPChallenge) wanted to see more Minimal challenges, it would happen.

Why are people always picking on you, do you suppose?

There are a whole bunch of minimal suggestions today (not from you) & you didn't even say thank you.

I pretty much agree with the thought that if you don't like how something is going that it's a lot more constructive to make helpful suggestions and keep on in a positive manner than to gripe. And if it doesn't happen, well.......does that ruin the whole experience for you?

As has been said before, you're under no obligation to get out your biggest baddest PS magic wand in any challenge. Personally, I like being able to do the best I can with an image without excessive editing.

My own rule of thumb for editing is that if I can't prep an entry in five minutes or less, my image sucks. YMMV.

I don't see the conspiracy, but I'll take your word for it. I do wonder what that motivation might be, though. What would be the point?

From my own perspective, I often wonder if anyone has ever suggested multiple ruleset topics.

I think it would be interesting to pick a topic and offer two challenges.....same topic, different ruleset. I know I'd love to view and vote the two.

Again, it seems a stretch that there's some point to NOT offering more Minimal challenges.

I'm having trouble seeing what's wrong with the idea that if you don't like things the way they are, take some initiative to try make them better. Why is it MY responsibility to "make things better"? And "better" by whose definition???

I did notice there are several new suggestions for Minimal challenges ... I assure you they will be placed into the pool of available topics soon.

A nice handful of viable Minimal challenges has been proposed, and they are in the queue. Thanks to those of you who contributed :-)

Okay, here's a suggestion for a "Minimal" challenge:

Smile. It may be derived from animal, vegetable or mineral sources.

:-) Sorry, but not buying that one (I don't get the impression I'm being picked on).

... and Thanks!

It's better than nothing in that we have non-zero minimal challenges, but I disagree that it's a "nice balance". As usual, three extended editing, and just the one minimal...

Bear in mind that one of those Extended challenges is a Free Study, and it's always up there, as is the Standard Free Study, so we don't "count" those when we look at the balance. Currently the balance is 2:1 with Extended in the lead. A couple weeks ago we had an influx of Minimal challenges and the balance was reversed. I think it will be rare that they are actually aligned at any given point in time, but over the long haul we're working to implement a better balance. All that said, sometimes a certain challenge just cries out to be held at a certain time with a specific editing set; the "Friday the 13th" challenge is an example.

I think it's worth noting that the current trend towards parity of Extended vs Minimal is due to two factors; SC "heard" the membership's communally-expressed opinion and took steps to move towards a better balance, and the membership, in turn, has responded by actually entering the Minimal challenges in strong numbers and with interesting photographs. Sort of exactly the way it should be, don't you think? :-)
