The kind of street photography I have been playing around with lately (but not submitting yet) involves something similar to what Judi was on about earlier. I tend to shoot street scenes wide and then crop in to find 2 3 or 4 separate images within a single frame, it is really interesting to find what you didn't actually shoot and a lot of the times it is even better. I think this is why both images above work for me and even a crop on the single umbrella boy would also work. I like them both.

one thing we haven't discussed is the force of a first impression. almost invariably I tend to like the first version of something, if indeed I like it at all. and in this case the first version was VERY well liked. not a clincher, but, I believe, a factor.

I like both versions; however I like the submitted version best. The addition of the umbrella boy takes away some of the candid feel of the image. The umbrella boy makes it look "set-up". The umbrella version seems better balanced, and I like that the boys have more room to run into; take out the third person and it would be perfect, imo.

They are both uniquely brilliant, but the cropped version is definitely much better because it gives the viewer a sense of mystery, with the other crop the fact that you can see the boy with the umbrella shows you that the little round curved walls that the boys are jumping on are not as high as one thinks. The cropped version makes the viewer wonder how high the boys are leaping, makes it more exciting and risky! I normally like glow but you don't need it for this image, in fact the way it was processed is just perfect because the picture in itself is so brilliant it doesn't rely on photoshop at all!

To me the cropped image just works better.
In the full image it's backwards the first thing you see is the jumping boys and it leads me to the umbrella man. It's action leading to no action. Switch that around and it would have been better.

I was wondering why he didn't enter the jumping boy shot in the FS of December last year and then I found this seems he most likely had a smorgasbord of shots to choose from :)

I like the larger crop better because it stays with me longer, while the smaller crop evaporates rather quickly in comparison.

i like the bigger one as long as i don't look at the boy with the umbrella... it' s odd but i looks like he doesn't want to be there. if i don't focus on his face then his presence and his umbrella elevate the other two boys and make their "levitation" even better.

so overall the submitted one was a better choice from my POV

The cropped version has strong feeling of light hearted play and fun. Something I would imagine might be premium time for young students. When you add the third young boy whom is actually another witness to the fun, the viewer being one witness, it seems to take away from that original feeling. The story changes dramatically from one to the other though and I think each have merits to consider. But I personally like the cropped version better. I like the story in that one better.

Thanks to all who have commented in this thread, I think it's been great.
I found that the comments paralleled my thinking when I initially processed the photo.
It was fun and I hope others will consider doing the same

The original crop is really good... but the submitted crop is genius. Adds Levity and imagination.

Indeed! This is the kind of discussion we need a *lot* more of. I found all of the opinion extremely educational. Especially Johanna's Posthumous-Like pontifications :-)
