Steven Shpall ( sns gave us a wonderful blue-ribbon shot in the just-completed "Hidden Gem" challenge, full of life and energy. But during the validation process I noticed it had been cropped significantly, and I said to myself "Wow, I think I'd like it even more if he'd left the umbrella-boy in!" So I asked Steven if I could show the alternate cropping and see how the community felt. I'm genuinely curious to see how y'all stack up on this; Penny, for example, prefers it as-submitted. Ignore my slightly more romantic processing, if you can:-)

Completely agree with you Bear!

Prefer the cropped version.

Much prefer the submitted one. The umbrella takes away the walking on air

I prefer the version with the umbrella man but I like both versions.

I like the cropped version better. For me, umbrella-boy upsets the balance, so to speak.

I fully agree!

I prefer the uncropped version with three subjects. In general, an odd number of subjects are more eye-pleasing than an even number. I think this is called the "odd rule". I’m not exactly sure why it works – but it does. Perhaps it’s about the balance that odd numbers create (there’s always one thing in the center to give balance). I find that three objects in a shot are particularly good. Five, Seven or more can work but you run the risk of clutter.

Fascinating. I love them both, but they are such radically different images. The submitted version is about lightness, and flow, and a journey into the unknown. The uncropped version has punctuation, a finality and a grounding that adds a tragedy-tinged and unreleting finale.

Interesting!

I like the "romance" you've edited in, Bear, and I like the larger crop, but without the umbrella boy. If we can't get rid of him, I like the smaller crop, as entered.

I think the "onlooker" spoils the "story" for me... of two boys off having fun while no one sees them.

I much like both versions... but they are very different end results. I think the as-submitted shot is every bit as good as the wider shot, but my reaction to them is entirely different. Really cool study in how one capture can produce such divergent end results.

I like the uncropped version... probably along the reasons that hahn23 mentioned. :)

I much prefer the cropped version. The third person robs it of movement and power through the introduction of a passive anchor.

FWIW, even before I posted this I was coming around to feeling like the as-submitted, 2-boy version is a livelier and more engaging image, for all that the less-cropped version with the 3rd figure may be "more interesting", if that makes sense? BTW, even the version I posted is cropped substantially.

I'm assuming my vote won't matter due to the electoral college ...

I believe there are two seperate strong images within the image. Together i don't believe it as strong but i would like to see them cropped into two stand alone images.

I prefer the submitted version. Two boys in their own realm.

+ for many of the stated reasons others prefer it - or find it strong even if they weigh the merits of the uncropped version equally.

I'd normally agree with the "odd number" idea, but in this case the fact that they're in a horizontal line with too much space between them to really work for me. On the other hand, I'd. be interested in isolating the two subjects on the left.

Interesting discussion...

It IS, isn't it? Big props to Steven for agreeing to let me start the discussion :-)

I prefer the cropped version. I think it is a brilliant shot. I think as stated that the cropped version is about movement and flow. The umbrella grounds it and
the focus becomes place rather than movement. (IMHO)
Fabulous photo Steven!
