a Nikon Coolpix at Sams Club. So, she asked me for any tips for beginners I could give. This is what I have come up with. Any suggestions?

Read the manual--in a PDF online if necessary.
Go to the manufacturer's website & register your new camera.
Always have charged spare batteries with you. And keep a spare SD card in your camera bag.
Keep the camera steady when you press the shutter button.
Be constantly aware of your camera settings--if you have time, check before you shoot.
Use your zoom--& zoom with your feet if necessary.
Be mindful of your POV--select it with care, don't let it just happen.
Always carry the camera everywhere. When possible, keep your camera in your hand, turned on.
Trust your impulses & shoot without second-guessing yourself.
Spend some time learning to post-process your shots.
Be kind to yourself. You will make mistakes. Learn from them.

Have a spare SD card in the camera bag for those occasions when you leave the other one in the computer from downloading.
(I have done this a couple of times .... won't say the words that came from my lips at the time)

Basic rule: point the camera, IMMEDIATELY snap picture, THEN start fussing with the settings and continue shooting :-) So many beginners stand there fussing as the moment passes them by. Any capture is better than no capture :-)

Tell her to buck the tiresome trend many noobs have of posting every single image they take online. And now that she owns a DSLR, to NOT start up a fauxtography business just because everyone on FB leaves gushy comments on how wonderful every image is. Quite enough FBers charging $50 for a portrait sitting and $500 for an 8hr wedding.

So. Thank you for your suggestions. I put them all in. I think the precarious world of professional photography is safe for now. My friend's old camera died, she got a replacement following the advice of her kids. I advised her to get a cute little pocket camera, or even get her first smartphone. Now she's asking questions.

Take the camera everywhere.

Shoot endlessly.

When you screen up the image, look at what you did getting the image that made you push the shutter button.

Build on that.....don't pick apart the image.
