I have today received an email from Serif saying that Affinity Photo for Windows (Beta) is available. I have just downloaded it and will give it a go. I am by no means an expert but it might be a credible alternative to Adobe Photoshop.

What's your assessment of the user interface? How approachable for a newbie?

I downloaded and installed it. The program's certainly interesting. I haven't fiddled much so I can't really evaluate, but it doesn't SEEM like it would be a steep learning curve for PS users; they have a whole lot of grammatical and syntactical similarities, so to speak. Seems to work pretty slick on my machine, maybe a bit slower than PS. But I have a VERY fast machine... It's certainly going to be a viable alternative for people who want a sophisticated processing tool at a fraction of the price. Whether it will ever support plugins like Nik and Topaz I don't know.

Still figuring it out. There are a number of instructional videos HERE. Bear, if you go to the preferences under the Edit menu you can point Affinity to your plugins. I have got it to show Nik and Topaz.
